Super Unleaded vs Regular

anyone use super u/l? any noticable increase in power??

Featured Replies

Well my dad usually fills with regular 95 octane. Have never had any detonation occuring as a reault even with jap ECU and foot planted to the floor. Have filled with super a couple of times and decided its not worth the extra 10p/litre by a long shot theres very little difference if any.

Must give optimax a try some time though

My m8 with the BMW M3 (sorry for swearing) reckons he gets no great performance increase, but does get about 10% extra mpg.

I've never done a direct back to back but always look for Optimax or super as a fall back. Maybe I'm just a sucker for advertising!

I prefer to use Super and Optimax is even better for peace of mind that you are getting decent fuel. If I'm a bit short on Z tokens and am at home, where Super does not grow on Petrol Station trees, then I'll grudgingly put unleaded in! Humbug! biggrin.gif

There has been some debate about this, and i think the guys with the jap ecu's will benefit the best from a higher octane fuel.

I notice the difference between optimax and anything lower.

hmmm - I'd be happy to do some back to back dynos with different petrol but wouldn't want to spend loads of money. Warren - or anyone - if we do another set of dynos, give me some notice and I'll try to come along for this. Until then - as a Jap stock ecu driver I tend to agree with you.

Probably psychosomatic, tho! biggrin.gif

From talking to my previous mechanic, who used to work on the subaru works cars, on jap impreza STIs the quoted power output of 276bhp drops to about 265 when using 95 octane, don't know if this applies to Zs though.

I'm currently training for my pilots licence and will be buying a plane at the end of the year (not as flash as it sounds, it's a fifteen year old cesna!) which means I'll have access to aviation fuel, will this blow up my engine?

Quick answer. I will got like a rocket, but will melt you engine from the inside. biggrin.gif

I try to use Optimax. I used it for a while when I arrived in Wigan. The petrol light was on so I got the benifits almost straight away. I then stopped for a few months because I didnt think it was doing much difference.

The next time I used it, again my petrol light was on and putting £30 meant I felt the difference almost straight away. And there was. The engine ticked over smoother, more responsive and I did get better MPG. Not much, 1-2 mpg, but I do small trips.

Any car is tuned to use an optimal octane rating, let's say 100 (because it's a simple number).

If you fill the above car with 110 fuel, you will gain NO benefit AT ALL

If you fill the above car with 95, you will NOT reach the optimal performance. In a turbo car, the engine will have some kind of detonation, that will be detected (hopefully), and the ECU will adapt, producing less power.

So, if you're changing for a higher octane rating, and you see an improvement, it simply mean that you should ALWAYS fill with the higher rating.

ok HERE GOES,

If you have a JAP import use OPTIMAX. The car is setup for 100 Octane and OPTIMAX is 98.2. My car which has some aftermarket bits runs smoother, more efficient, and better performance on OPTIMAX.

Now detonation, you may not here it on a turbo car, at low rpm the knock sensor will be working so preventing it, but at higher RPM the sensor doesnt work, and due to the increase noise from the engine you will not here it either.

UK cars I believe were set to run on 95 octane. The change is in the timming, which in turn will knock your overall Horsepower down as a result. Now the best way is to get the car setup on the fuel you wish to run, by having the ECU mapping done for your particular vehicle, with a tank of the fuel you want to run.

SE I believe do custom maps as do, AMD in Oxfordshire, and POWER-PLUS in Belgium.

The Belgium company are a reputable motorsport company and hence the one I would trust. They also already have an off the shelf map for the 300ZX, so they know the car.

Yep my car runs better on Optimax, I do notice a big difference from 80mph to 100mph. I ran optimax with Octane booster at Santa Pod, gave me about 103 RON.

No way 103 RON. Optimax and a bottle of Millers or similar 99-100 RON MAX.

If Optimax is 97RON, what is the RON+ for an octace booster additive then, 6 RON?

Optimax is around 98.5 RON. I usually use this with a bottle of Millers, so it's more like 100-101 RON

I found this thread about octanes, boosters and Toluene.

http://www.saabs.org/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000774.html

Can any one get me some of this Toluene please! Wonder if you could setup a second small (gallon) fuel tank and rig something to inject a dose of it like nitrous into the fuel pipe close to the engine when you floor it? Could be a hidden system so no would know, unlike Nitrous which if so damned obvious to insurance engineers?

Shell Optimax Unleaded Petrol, costs 79.9p/litre local to me. Supposed to have been designed by Shell in partnership with Ferrari. Higher octane therefore better engine performance.

Some places/Shell garages still don't supply Optimax yet. Near where I'm from, in the NE, don't do it. They do in Derby though, where I work smile.gif

biggrin.gif LMFAO biggrin.gif

I've got a Shell tin-pot garage down the road and they don't even do regular Super FFS! Last weekend I had to drive on vapour for sodding miles to get to a main Shell garage at Menai to fill up with lovely Optimax!!! biggrin.gif

Struggle to get Super at any of the garages where I live, including Tesco. Tis arse to say the least!

I wouldnt use any think other than optimax becouse it runs so sweet on it.

Our Z hasn't had a lot done to it, just a stillen induction kit, cat free front pipes and a mongoose tail section. Thought I would try the super unleaded with Octane boost to get the juice up to 100 RON (what ever a RON is). Even disconnected the battery to let teh ECU reset - didn't notice anything that would make spend that much on a tank of fuel again oh, and it made it smoke quite a bit - once the tank was of expensive fuel had gone so did the smoke. Think you would be better getting a decent chip and running on standard unleaded.

Mark, the octane booster is what made your car smoke, not the higher octane fuel

you cant run any comparisons when you change more than one thing at a time...

optimax is ~5p/litre more expensive ?

.05*60l = 3 quid more expensive per tank

3 quid = 16 miles on normal unleaded. (24mpg as a damn high average...)

i get average 30 miles more per tank on optimax than normal unleaded

so i spend 3 quid more, and gain 6 quid back

Ive been using optimax for a week and now im using unleaded, no difference in performance for me, ill get the milage together when the tank is dry, I did about 200 on optimax, (1st week with car and done about 800miles :\)

Mike

Good point Craig, never looked at it like that. I'll try again without the octane boost and see if it makes a difference to the miles per tank - if it starts smoking again it'll be back to the unleaded

save lots of pennies and buy some of the super high octane fuel they have at silverstone but be prepared for a slap as it aint cheap
