I've heard people here in France that relocate the knock sensor while engine is out.

But i've only heard that in France, so does any one can confirm? :D

(I don't trust French   )

The ECU is tuned to listen to the det sensor in its stock location. Relocating it may make it over sensitive and trigger safety boost when no det is there (background engine noise) or it may make it less sensitive, rendering it useless anyway...

that's exactly wht i was thinking but this guy in France told me everytime he pull an engine out of a Z, he move the det sensor...

The Det sensor is placed in the centre point of the 6 cylinders, so moving it off-centre will affect what it 'hears'. Although saying that, and perhaps Andy might partially agree here, since cylinder 6 seems to be 'the one to go' most commonly - resulting in burnt crowns and/or holed-pistons, perhaps locating it a little closer to 6 would be a benefit?? But then it's all down to how those clever little Japs programmed the ecu. Maybe the ecu is programmed to act when it hears det on all cylinders - rather than just one?

My advise would be to replace the old sensor and the short cable which connects it to the main loom with new ones if the engine's being pulled, but keep it located where it should be. The new one and its connector will last at least another 10 years before the seal goes and lets the horrid green crusty stuff build up again on the pins.

My 2p :)

They dont work very well anyway .
