Hi. Not being a compter wizard i have a problem.

Have recentlty purchased a hp omnibook 500 second hand. But it has a password stopping me getting to the bios. Someone has told me to take the battery out of the motherboard for 10 secs and put it back. Will this wipe everything off the hard drive? Seems a bit drastic if it does. Ideas anyone. Cheers.

No it wont wipe everything in the hard drive - but you will loose all you bios settings - You will probably need to reconfig your hard disks if they dont Auto Detect on startup.

Shoudl get rid of the password !

Please please buy it - im gettin desperate now god damit !!!

that is one of the ways to clear the bios,

you might have to remove battery for more than 10 seconds, I have always left for 20 minutes just to be on safe side,

you can also short across battery terminals with a paperclip.

it won't damage your harddrive, i've done it dozens of times

Ok. If you cant get the laptop apart, then how do you do it?

what make of bios is it? there may be a default password for it hiding somewhere,

you might have to remove the keyboard first to get to the gutz of the machine

there are programs available to read the BIOS password from in windows. You can change it/all other settings too. Not sure what the program is called that does it. I have a program called "killcmos" but i think that blows up the chip or something i aint gonna try it out wink.gif

Wasn't Cmos a character in Emmerdale Farm?

Some old bloke who used to complain alot in the Woolpack if my memory serves me correctly.

killcmos simply wipes over the checksum so when bios reboots next and does its CRC check the two numbers don't work and it resets itself,
