As you may or may not know from my previous thread, I'm looking for a TT for up to around £3-£3.5K as a weekend/evening car.

 

I've spotted one on autotrader, which is described as a 'mature enthusiast owned example' and in excellent condition. It is a UK auto in black and the pictures do look nice and the spec is good. It comes with a 3 month warranty.

 

I've spoken to the garage, who have advised me that it has done 140,000 miles but has full service history. It's advertised at £3700.

 

Is this good value for money, or would I be better of going for an import with lower mileage????

I would get another one with less than 70K miles. Its really variable how long turbos can last but with 140Kmiles on the clock they must be on the way out.

thats a lot of miles but depending on age could be less than average for the year. however...i'd look for something around 1/2 that. the more miles done the more worn components get

that sounds like a lot of miles, but is nothing really when you take the age of the car into consideration. My UK Z had over 144,000 (thats less than 10k a year) on it when I bought it 2 years ago and still runs pretty sweet though ive only put another few thousand on it since then.

 

Mileage isnt everything its how the cars been looked after and the type of running the cars had, bets theres a a few on the forum with low milage cars that have just as many problems as high mileage motors.

 

Saying all that it is a uk car and will have been subjected to british weather and salt on the roads for longer than an import, and like mine will probably need some body work.

 

things have gone wrong on my motor but i would put them down purely to age rather than the amount of miles clocked up.

 

Get the motor checked over by someone who knows Z's dont let the mileage put you off!!

another point to consider, can you be certain that the low mileage import car hasnt been clocked. its hard to prove :)

You just need to have a look at it, i went to look at a UK Manual TT with 140k on it before i got mine, it had full nissan history and shed loads of paperwork so i thought it would be worth a look but the car was a shed.

I don't think dealer history with these cars is the be all end all, it depends on how well the owners have treated the car.

140,000 miles on a moden engine isnt that excessive these days engines with proper care and maintainence can go on for a lot longer, modern oils preserve the engine and its components a lot better than years ago, you say the car has full service history? that tells me the car has been looked after, people dont buy a £30 odd grand car and not look after it.

 

You can buy a 70,000 miler that has no service history never been maintained properly, and been thrashed around half its life?, chances are if it has full service history it possibly has a portfolio of whats been replaiced over the years, ask the seller if it has and if possible to look at, any car this age you pay your money you takes your chance. I would personally go for a manual on a higher mileage car as the gearboxies have a longer life span
