I have owned my XL 500 for about five years now and its been stored for the last 2 years as it needs a new clutch and and some oil seals also abit of tidying up as i used to use it for the fields and lanes so now iam thinking of a winter project get it all striped down rebuild the engine, powder coat the frame and respray the tank and plastics and make it look like new again.

This image is not my bike as i dont have a pic of it/carnt find a pic of it but looks exactley as it did when i bought it apart from the number 11 as mine are blank

I don't profess to know much about bikes, but is that an oldskool motorcross bike...or 'scrambler'? Or is it an old Enduro type bike?

Cool!

I used to have an XL185S years ago.

I love 70s trail bikes with their organic shaped exhausts and tiny headlights.

Get it fixed up and going!

I have a CBR600 Sport and a XR400 at the moment but I'd love a 70s trailie - XT500, XL500 or something for bopping about town.

edit - if you need bits I bet Kenny up at Brassington could help. Or David Silver Spares.

i remember the police used to have these in essex where i live to chase the kids on crossers in the nature reserve back in the 80 s. good , solid , reliable bikes back then.

Craig David's dirt bike terminology lesson ;)

Motocross bike - no lights, designed to race round short dirt circuits

Enduro bike - detuned motocrossers with lights. Almost road legal. Race longer cross country races, often on paths with vehicular access.

Trail bike - dirt capable bike to ride on paths / trails with vehicular access.

Trials bike - wierd low thing like they used to have on Kickstart. For timed trials over obstacles with penalties for putting your foot down. Bunny hop over Volvos.

I think a 'scrambler' can be any of the first three...

They used to use them for enduro as its a big 4 stroke thumper

It's a trial bike, of course. :)

Anyone remember junior kickstart?

It's a trail bike or an enduro bike. ;)

It is one of the best bikes i have bought so carnt wait till ive got the clutch sorted so i can get back out on it

I thought Enduro bikes were beefed long distance up MotorX bikes, not Trail bikes.

Moto-x bikes are 2 stroke and dont last as long as the 4 stroke that are built for long distance the 2 stroke moto-x bikes are very high reving and need rebuilding quit alot where the 4 stroke are a lower reving engine which lasts alot longer

The 2-stroke / 4 stroke thing isn't a hard and fast rule.

I had an RMX250 last year which was an enduro bike based on Suzuki's motocrosser, the RM250. Both are 2-strokes.

Motocrossers all used to be two strokes but now they're all four strokes.

Nice retro thumper there johnboy, in mint condition

they're worth a bob or two.

as for the 4st or 2st debate, i'm sticking with 2str's,

at least if i have a spark & fuel it'll run (probably! ;) )

Most mx bikes are now 4st, but most manufacturers

still make the 2str's, and they are slowly making a

comeback, due to noise regs etc... To make a 4str

fast, it has to be as loud as possible, which inevitably

causes problems.

Enduro's are becoming very popular, due to the value

for money, time on the bike & easy going nature of them.

I've got a 'crosser which has been adapted for enduro's,

ie: lower gearing, flywheel weight, different pipe etc...

Here's a pic of my honda.....

Nice old scool bike there john. This was my dr350 4stroke, was very quit only used it for offroad enduro, but found the setup to soft for the terrain, so sold it, nice bike though, it use to start first time aswell, even after months of no use, most 4 strokes iv used need to be kicked punched, sometimes a nightmare to start from cold.

Brings back memories had one same colour, and nearly the same apart from the shitty wee 125 engine in mine.
