My alternator doesn't start charging the car until the revs hit around the 2g mark.

I can start the car and it will idle fine (unless the battery is flat) but when you measure the battery voltage, it sits around 12 volts. Raise the engine revs to around 2000 and then the alternator kicks into life and starts charging normally (around 14 to 14.4 volts).

Does this happen to everyone or am I lucky enough to have to swap out my alternator ?

It should do, as your car battry will go flat with sitting in traffic.

I ran my Z with out the alternator connected, and that lasted about 15 mins just idleing.

Once I've had the engine revs up to 2000, and the alternator kicks in, it will continue to charge at any RPM's. It just has to get there once and then it's OK (until you switch off and start it next time).
