Looking at a new clutch.......opinions please!

Im looking at getting a new clutch which would preferably be good at letting me do launches off the light without burning the damn thing up..........the standard clutch just wont be able to do that repeatedly so its time for an upgrade as its on its way.............will be introducing NOS later on so will have to be strong enough to cope with that............rough bhp figures of 450 is what im aiming to get once its all done

Would consider OS Giken but im not rich so thats out of the question.........so far iv looked at ACT and RPS.........is this the right way to go and which one should i go for?

Also would it be worthwhile to get a new lightened flywheel or am i better off just skimming the original one...........does it make a big difference?

Any help would be appreciated

Fas

I cannot advise you about what clutch to use. As far as the flywheel goes it would be safer, and more practical to buy a lightened flywheel. From previous experiance with other Jap imports, the flywheels tend not to have the extra metal on them to make skimming a good idea, lightening stock can cause them to fail.

Again i cant afford them kin da clutches as theyre way out of my budget..........looking to spend around £450 for a clutch.......

Think im gonna be restricted to ACT or RPS really..... :(

For that budget mate the RPS Max street is what i used for years and held 475lb's of torque no problem, even the mapper at WRC with John dixon commented how it held up after around 20 power runs :) Must have sold over 250 RPS units so far and probably the most common used in he US too.

Let me know if yer want me get you one in..

Oh more details on me website http://www.smithys-place.co.uk/clutch.php

cheers

As per Black Slag (Chris), I bought an XTD Stg 3 clutch for one of my cars, excellent price because of £/$ exchange rate!!

Had a look at your website.........just wanted to know whats the difference between organic and 6 puck?

http://cgi.ebay.ca/XTD-STAGE-3-CLUTCH-FLYWHEEL-90-96-300ZX-TWIN-TURBO_W0QQitemZ190037584672QQihZ009QQcategoryZ33730QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

i've been using these guys for my clutches for 3yrs now and never had a minutes bother with them.

i've fitted about a dozen to various cars now and none of them has ever complained.

Chris.

I've got one of these fitted and it slips like a bstard, bag of **** imo!!!!

A 6 puck mate is another term for a paddle clutch, this is also as per the ebay link above, it's a 6 puck. The downsides of this type are that they wear down far quicker than organic, when they do wear down the disc is more expensive to replace and idealy you should replace same for same, the fewer the pucks the quicker it wears down, the pucks alllow higher amounts of torque over the organic discs generally however take into account what i've just said above and the often awkwardness to drive with it, best option imo is a high powered organic version, hence the Max street, this is just a bit heavier feel than stock, while the RPS Sport street is same feel as stock but for zeds NOT running bigger turbos and injectors.

Just to add a bit on lightweight flywheels, the design of the one used on ebay link is somewhat unusual, am happy for anyone to show me a pic of any other well known brand that uses that same design around the ring gear, RPS, Fidanza and JWT being the most common are nowt like that ! btw if the RPS fly is a bit expensive i can easliy supply the JWT for around 250 quid.

Hope all that helps ;)

cheers

it must have had some contamination or summat on it.

mine gets used at york dragway regularly running slicks and launching at 5500rpm without any slip.

or maybe you just got a bad 1, who knows.

Chris.

i got an rps max street, from smithy and its ace, not much heavier pedal than stock, bites really well, and its taken loadsa side stepping, burnouts etc. im runnin 1 bar of boost which blasted an act clutch out. i got an xtd flywheel fited at the same time, very slight difference to the feel ov the car, changing down gears seems smoother, and the engine revs a bit more freely, thats the combo for me.

maybe i did. I've done loads of digging arounds on the net and it looks like people either love em or hate em. I know which camp i sit in at the moment.

Its ok for noraml driving but as soon as you nail it its slip city. maybe it will change after its bedded in but jusging by how much it slips i seriously doubt it. Strange thing it when it slips it doesnt smell of burning liek you would expect. Very strange.

Smithy, can you get me a price for an rps street max clutch for an ST205 please?

Cheers

RPS RPS RPS!!!! Wouldn't consider any other! Smithy is your guy for this :) ACT are shite - VERY low life and way too heavy pedal. Fas I've just removed a lightened flywheel from a car and he wants to sell it, can pass you his details if you're interested bud :)
