well had the car to a garage today and he reckons it sounds like the little ends that are rattling on overrun, the noise only comes on at around 2500 revs just after you blip the throttle. only seems to have gotton worse since i put the magnatec in. i used the semi 10-40. i put a shot of STP in her today and still the sound is there. its not that its a real loud noise its just i know if it is the little ends then it will get alot worse. What are my options. would it be cheaper to pull the engine, strip her down and replace all bearings ie, big main and little. i could also check on other things that could need changing. or would it be cheaper to buy a block with heads and just do a swap? i,m not really put off by the idea of havin to pull the engine just a bit gutted as ive only owned her for a few weeks. but i was told that owning one of these cars can be a bit of a headache at times. any info would be appreciated.

Ohh shudders, STP, Magnatec!!

Try the VTC springs aswell

wats the vtc springs

wat oil wud u recomend

VTC springs failed! Seen it before. Replaced them (old ones looked fine) and noise gone. Sounds like you have exactly the same!!!

VTC is the variable valve timing mechanism. The springs are there to stop any 'slop' in the system. Should really be replaced with the cambelt. Is it due a 60k service?

it had the belt changed when i bought her . at 74000. i dont think the springs have been done. were can i get hold of the kit to do job andy??

You need:

2 water hoses that go behind the top metal coolant pipe to the heads - 14055-F6511

2 O-rings - 01001-00191

2 VTC Springs - 13072-45V20

All available from MJP ;)

Might not be these but thats where I'd start :)

cheers mate. as i said the rattle is more noticable wen hot and has been like this for two weeks. it dosnt seem to be getting any worse...but i supose i,l have to see if this sorts it. who is MJP, do you have a contact number. cheers

More likely to happen when hot - VTC system uses oil pressure to move the actuators ;) As the oil thins, there's more play in the system maybe?

my Z apparently has VTC spring problem at the moment - it sounds like a diesel between 2500-3500 revs. when you open the bonnet, it sounds like something small and metal rattling up against the cam end covers. also from inside the car, at idle, the rattling sounds like a loose piece of plastic from behind the steering wheel.

thanks guys.. please let this be the problem. i dont think my wife can take the glum look on my face any longer ...lol. and i cant bear the thought of my lovely lady sat on the drive injured....

will this damage the engine if it is the springs ?? ie will it cause more damage

i dont believe so, no. i think you just lose some power.

yes sounds about right, sometimes it pulls real hard and other dosnt seam as powerfull

how long you had the problem with yours skyline?

normally if its vvt spring, the noise will completly diasapear above a certain rpm, you could disconent the vvt leads from left and right bank with the car at idle, if noise disapears then you know which one has possibly failed, and replace, dont drive the car with leads disconected though as it will run like shit as there will be no variable valve timing ;)

about two months. my fault as i put too thin an oil in :slap: two people have asked me if my car is a diesel!!!! how embarassing! :o :o
