i have a manual ecu, in a manual car, but with the engine from a auto.

so, man car, man gearbox

auto engine

You can use it to start the car if testing summit, but thats it. Auto ECU in a manual car is no probs though.

i dont get it. if the auto one runs the manual ok then how come it doesnt work the other way round?

and i think i have a good contendor for "worst Z in the UK" again lol

The compatability issue between auto and manual ecu is the operation of the auto box, the auto box ecu interacts with the engine ecu so that that when the auto box changes gear the engine ecu lowers the engine output slightly to make the changes smoother.

The manual ecu can run the engine reasonably well engine but not the auto box as is does not have the same communication facility.

oh. i see. so basically if i put a manual ECU on an auto it'll run ok but probably kill the 'box fast yeah?

Have tried a mates manual ecu in my auto zed and the engine started ok, went for a quick drive and gearbox changed up very hard into second, then did not want to select any higher, put the ecu back as before and all ok again.

I put a manual ECU in my converted Zed ( auto to manual) and it started but didn't seem to want to rev properly, sort of reluctant as though the timing was retarded ??

The Manual ECU will not work on a car with Auto Gearbox

The Auto ECU will work on a Manual car BUT even that is not recommended. As far as i know the AUTO Ecu has different timing/fuel map at different RPM's than the Manual one which gives the car a different response and also you are more likely to detonate (if you change to Manual gearbox with Auto Ecu)

So if you are changing gearbox from Auto --> Manual or Manual --> Auto you need to get the right ECU.

no, im not doing a conversion. i just have a JD mapped ECU lying around (for a manual) and an auto junkbucket (car) i was going to try it on. im not going to now (obdviously after all the replies - cheers for the info folks). i just wandered what the car would feel like with the different ECU.

cheers
