I bought a 1990 TT recently and have noticed a delay in the upshift from 1-2 and 2-3 she kicks up the revs and holds before changing, makes pulling away extremely sluggish. Once shes in 3rd no probs, anyone have any idea what might be the cause of this delay???

Mate, your transmission might be on the way out. Have it serviced ASAP! Your gear cogs maybe shaved, which is why it takes a while to engauge. Drive the car easy, & have it checked out as soon as you can.

If there is metal shavings in the oil... save your money for a new tranny :(

how much do tranny's or rebuilds cost anyway? would it end up as cheap to convert it to a manual?

si.

Not sure about the UK, but if it's like Australia it would be a lot cheaper to replace with a good 2nd hand auto. I blew my auto transmission, & was going to convert to manaul, until I found a heavily modified auto for sale CHEAP :)

cheers all for the replies, gonna run that diagnostic will post if I find anything out, cars going in for a service on Tuesday so hopefully will come back with some positives if not maybe new tranny, sickener if it is the case. How much did you pay for your 2nd hand auto?

This is a pretty common thing if its what i'm thinking about. Mine used to do it, would often refuse to shift from 1st to 2nd before 4000rpm or so, and it would shift pretty vigorously. Much better after a fluid change.

Cheers for the advice, car going in for a service on Tuesday so will ask them to change the tranny oil. Ran the transmission diagnostics, electrics are all fine. Hopefully they find nothing in the existing oil. Transmission oil levels are a little low, but rather than topping it up going for complete change with recommended fluids. Hopefully I will see a major improvement or my next few weekends will be extremely boring saving up for a new tranny.

think the book says dexron II as a standard fluid for the tranny, you might want to go dexron III as it has better pressure and heat properties
