Hi peeps,

Im just stated getting a noise coming through, what sounds like, the transmision tunnel. It reminds me of a wheel bearing starting to go, that funny rubbing sort of noise. Ive just had new discs, pads & lines fitted....supposedly no probs there. Soooooo......is there a prop shaft bearing on these cars? if so does it sound like mines on its way out.

Is it pricey to fix?

Cheers

Marc

Generally, you feel vibration from the propshaft bearing as it's the rubber carrier that goes rather than the bearing itself.

Is the noise present in all gears?

Its an auto m8, but as the speed climbs then the noise becomes audible at around 2.5/3.5k, its not very loud, I originally thought it was a whell bearing just playing up, but then I started to concentrate on the tunnel or somewhere under the car, its hard to tell exactly where it originates.

If you check/change centre bearing remember the UJ's thats what went on mine, and they are fixed ones (not meant to change) aswell!

With the prop off wriggle around to see/hear if smooth moving.

You need to consider the rear gearbox mount too. This sags with age and so the prop isn't in a straight line between the gearbox and the rear diff - which when rotating works the centre bearing too much. People change the centre bearing (me included) when really it's the gearbox mount.

Gearbox mount about £55, prop centre bearing about £140.

Rear mount is easy, centre bearing is great fun.

Good luck
