they have decided to buy a new one and are working to a budget. pc world just confused the fook out of them when they went there so i have said i would try and help them find a reasonable computer.

Don't goto any superstore like them they are mad from shite components.

 

They put cheapy board and ram etc in looks good on paper but not so good in realty.

I got mine from Dell , recommended by someone who works on `puters . I`m very happy with it . They only sell online , but you get to choose the spec and price range . Then they deliver it to your door :hyper: . Nice to see somebody helping their folks out (although I`m certain you all would :bow: )...Good man , Gaz :D

i bought mine from PC world a while ago and thought the insides were very good i admit alot of them are what you said but if you know what you want you can get a good one i couldnt build mine for what i paid

there is a reason for that. They components are crap. You think you are getting a 3.2ghz computer, but its performance is usually a lot lower than that.

 

Dell is an option but I am sure if you read the small print, there is no warranty what so ever, but check that out.

You can use your windows copy and your current keyboard and mouse.

I work that out to be about 371 (inc VAT), with out the monitor, and 479 with the monitor for a small out of the way computer, which should keep them happy for a lot of years.

The computer has 2 front USB, 2 rear USB, 4 internal USB (means you get a plate to add them if you wish), onboard VGA, onboard sound, 2 SATAII ports, SATA RAID, IDE port, serial port. The computer comes with a psu too.

 

I am sure you know some one who can put it together. Or have a go yourself. Everytime I show some one how to put a comptuer together, they always say "IS THAT IT????" All you should need to do with this is plug in the HDD, DVD, Mem and CPU.

I've had no problem at all with Dell - have got 2 of their PC's. Both well built, both used a great deal and both reliable.

 

Dell as a company have been good - delivering on time and when thay said they would.

i would never buy from dell or pc world.

if they still have their screen, mouse and keyboard all you need is the box. there is one on ebuyer for £200 thats including VAT

Dell sell PC's cheap...because that is what they are. All of their components are cheap. I have a huge contract with them for work for that same reason...they are cheap and I can get spares cheap....doesn't stop them being crap PC's though.

I think building one yourself is ok for people who understand it - I don't and I imagine your parents don't. A mate got one 'hand built' and had loads of problems. Maybe it'd be fine.

 

I got an Acer laptop from Tesco 6 months ago - reduced from £500 to £400. It seems excellent - as good as the Mrs' Sony Vaio except her battery life is better.

 

A mate who is well into computers told me not to get a Celleron processor - a Centrino is much better.

thanks for the input guys. they want technical support and insurance and suchlike so would have to be a shop purchased PC I'm afraid. i had an offer of one to be built for me which i really appreciate but if anything goes wrong there is no backup guarantee. i cant keep traveling just because the damn thing won't boot up lol.

The only thing Dell i would buy is their screens and that's properly Viewsonic or Lg just branded as Dell.

 

Dell are cheap for a reason.

 

Building one yourself?? well easy enough if you know what your doing but if your a novice don't atempt as it could be a nightmare. like there are the little things that matter like handling ram correctly, fitting the heatsink can be a bitch if first atempt.

 

a cpu is a cpu but things which will be cheap and crap but look good on a spec sheet! ram, hard drive, Board. These parts make the big difference.

ive built loads and never had a problem, but now it's cheaper to buy a barebones system than to buy the parts and put it together. have a look at the "Asus Vintage V2" used loads of these doing jobs for people and you cant fault them, they have everything and more than your parents need
