Has anyone had experience of owning both of these cars. I'm looking at buying one of these super cars and would like some advice.

Well come here and we will say 300ZX go GTO site and they will say GTO.

I hear that the 4WD of the GTO makes the experience unpersonal. The car gives very little feedback and feels very robotic.

Acceleration is better in the ZX because of the 2WD.

I dont think the GTO is easy to modify.

And we are just so cool and you need to join us. biggrin.gif

There is some one on here who had a GTO/3000GT

im sure there's a guy on here owns both macca knows him he knows about both and semms a decent chap

Henri, has both doesn't he (Dodge Stealth)?

Although I haven't seen him on for a while.

I've owned both, I found the GTO to be a fast car (although I think mid range the 300 has the edge on it) and very safe (you'd want to be a complete muppet to write one of these off), running costs were similar (read Expensive!) but I find the 300 to be by far and away the better car of the two, better handling, much more involving without sacrificing any comfort, and generally far better at putting a smile on your face smile.gif

Hope this helps!

Brian

Tooley and Macca are right and we have both cars on the drive. It's hard to say which one is better as they are quite different so here are a few of the differences.

The GTO has 4WD (ours is not the 4WD/4WS model) and so it is very sure footed. If you push it hard enough it will break away, although this is not as scary as it sounds as it tends to give you a 4 wheel drift.

The 300 has HICAS which is active 4 wheel steering at speed and makes the 300 steering pin sharp, however the 300 is a bit wheel spin happy (not a bad thing if you like it - but make driving in the wet fun).

You can tune both to 400BHP without too much difficulty, after that there is plenty of bits for the 300 but less for the GTO and this is reflected in the price.

On the gto forum (www.gtouk.org.uk) they will tell you that the GTO is fine for long distances, but I prefer the 300 (and the kids complain less about the back of the 300). Side by side the GTO is longer, wider and higher but has less room inside.

The GTO is in it's fourth body version, while the 300 has two (there is also a 2 seater version of the 300 but the most common is the 2+2). Body kits for the GTO are rare these days but there are many bits and kits available for the 300 - look at Macca's car in the rides section for a stunning example of a modified car.

Both cost about the same to run (insurance petrol etc.) however if it all goes wrong you would wish for a 300 as GTO bits are rare and expensive.

It's down to personal taste, if you cant decide get both!!!!

I here them Supra aren't bad either!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

IMHO there's very little between any of the Japanese supercars i.e. GTO, 300ZX, Supra, NSX, RX7.

It's a case of personal preference.....and if your pockets are deep enough...Buy them all if you can!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Great stuff - opinions but no flame (yet). So let's start one! nonononononononono.

One person's opinion only. Before I bought mine, I was trawling everything from MGC / B V8 (no really, stop laughing please - I got better) to Mitsubishi FTO, GTO, Toyota Supras various shapes and so on and so on.

I then took a drive in a Jag XJS. Heavenly sounding engine, crap driving position.

Cutting a long story short, my 300ZX is way better than the Jag (and everything else I tried.) A mate of mine bought a GTO. Very impressive.

Mechanically, they're both what you would expect from J engineering. Damn good.

Performance (speaking as a wimp) both are much more than most everyday drivers like me can use fully.

The only way to decide is to park the two side by side, stand there and make up your mind which one you want to get into every morning (fnarr).

Your decision is which tickles your fancy. (there, you can tell I'm old missus. No - don't mock).

Have fun biggrin.gif

I love the shape of the 300zx and the performance, and that is why i have one.

I really do also like the shape of the GTO as i think it is one of the better looking japaneese cars.

The only thing is, if you look at all the reviews in magazines than you will see that the GTO is not well admired by journalists.

And that is what put me of a bit.

I would go for a 300zx just based on that it is the easier of the two to maintain, from what i understand (like its easy lol)

But go for what you think looks best and drives best.

oops

I agree with Warren, the 300zx was very well thought of on release in the motoring press.

I guess they are very different animals - I love the GTO but the thought of one going wrong on me would scare me to Belgium and back !

Henri LeHir has 300zx TT manual and auto and a Stealth manual so talk to the guy - he is one of the most clued up Swiss nutcases you could meet:

I think GIO said it in the his last sentance, you have to live with it so buy what you like.

I have no idea why the press are so against the GTO, the last review I read compairing the 300, GTO, Supra and RX7 said that the GTO didn't drive like it looks? it does! They probably all do. Just as a precation though, the GTO (like most big Jap engines) has suspect big ends, don't worry so much about the turbo's as they can go on anything (e.g rover diesel turbo) don't take anything with the slightest engine noise - it's big bucks if it lets go and as I said earlier, if it is a GTO the bucks are bigger.

Before I bought my Z I did look at A GTO,But like Mark said there ain't alot of room inside one,Both very nice cars but at the end of the day the Z did it for me wink.gif.Nice to see you posting Mark, keep it up bud wink.gif.

I like them both so I'm not going to comment too much about a car I have no relevant experience of.

Only reason I didn't go for a GTO is the turbo versions are ALL manuals! Bummer!

I reckon if they were Autos I would have got one!

Timmy, good point. I should have mentioned the GTO is manual, they do make auto's but they are all non TT's (as far as I know). Our 300 is an Auto, which adds to the different driving eperiences between the cars! (both go like sit of a shovel though).

I F***ing hate computers!!!*!?!

Time for a career change me thinks

I dont think there is anythink in them you just have to try them all.I did and the z was by far the best for me .Also find out how often the diffent clubs met up.YOU DONT TO HAVE WANT A SUPER CAR AND NOWERE TO GO.so start looking and may the force be with you luke.

------------------

Me and Iain were on about this today, I don't know why people try and compare the cars! FFS, they are all Jap Super monster godzillas at the end of the day.

Fantastic, RX-7 does it for me but again, dicky engines! Well not dicky, perfectly engineered and when they go bang you can put measures in place to stop the short mileage blow ups! I love them, I love Soups, I love GTO's, I love Soups! I love 'em all! LOL biggrin.gif

So when certain individuals say to me "If you love Supras so much why don't you fuck off and buy one?" simple! COST!

Soups still sell for a good 10K minimum for a half decent one.

But on the other foot I still love me Z! wink.gif

As me and Big Mac said, if we could have a few of these killing machines we would! Like Henri in Herdy Gerdy land lucky enough to have...hats off and admiration.

Just a big thankyou for all your replies and advice. I am leaning towards the 300zx for anumber of reasons. I have been keeping aneye on this site for several weeks now and it's good to see your enthusiasm for these cars. Also I believe there are more 300zx owners in the uk than gto owners which goes to show they must be the better car. Plus I think the chances of getting a good one for around 7k is better.

Thankyou again

Brian
