Ok as you guys know my best mate and myself have been fabricating vents and spraying my bonnett and the end result was looking gorgeous, but I came to my Z the following day and overnight the paint has lost it's glass look and has gone all speckely, textured and feels very rough too touch in fact if you touch it, it leaves your fingure mark embedded in the laquer as i found out when i put my hand on the bonnett earlier... :slap:

We don't quiet understand what went wrong because it's all happened over night in the cool night air... Should we have left in the Z in a dry garage over night???

Ok we've obviosuly gotta do it again this week and understand I now gotta sand it all down with 1200 grit but need to know and help in the times needed between spraying the car and applying the laquer afterwards...

Originally we sprayed the car in 2 pac paint and then put the laquer on pretty much straight afterwards but think he only put a thin coating of laquer on... I can't remember which type of laquer we used I understand you can get 2pac laquer now as well.

Would this have caused the orange peel effect because the laquer sprayed wasn't thick enough or we used the wrong type of laquer with 2 pac paint or should we have left the paint to dry for a certain time before applying the laquer afterwards... It's really weird as the car was fine driving home and the laquer was touch dry, it all happend overnight in the outside air...

Please help, ideally we would like to know:

1: How long we should leave the paint to set before applying the laquer coat afterwards.

2: How many coats of laquer we should apply after spraying the red paint.

3: Standing times between the finished end result with paint and laquer before I can use the Z again.

Thank you most gratefully to anyone who can help as I'm feeling really down and gutted at the moment because it was looking great and now it's all turned to shit...

Here are the pics...

That looks like it has got moist before the paint/lacquer has had chance to harden, maybe one of the other chaps could confirm this!

Paint/lacquer if not a low bake oven should be left for 24 hours at least to harden properly, this could also have caused it to go FUBAR.

to answer your other question, you should allow the basecoat to dry for 25-30 minutes( I think) before appying any form of lacquer.

When you say 2 pack paint (red) did you use hardener? was it a gloss finish??

I don't really know but it was looking pretty shiney even before the laquer went on, no hardner of any type was used...

It was a case of: Spray the bonett, flush out the old paint and thinners from the compress gun container then fill that up with the laquer and spray.. Guess the red paint would have still been quiet wet..

That's your problem imho!-your base coat was still wet and it should dry matt!

Then the laquer put on for the finish.Yes you can get 2 pack laquer and is really the best to use but you will need hardener and thinners for it.leave at least a week if not baked before polishing!

looks like blooming or silicone too me

Cool, ok so i'm a bit thick on this as my mate does the spraying, so when he's sprayed the base coat of red in 2 pack, do we leave that about 30Mins like Scotty said before applying the laquer... Also, whats the hardener that everyones talking about??? Is that something that mixes in with the laquer or is something that is sprayed on afterwards???

hardener you mix with your base coat and thinners.

i would leave it over nite before applying the laquer if your not using heat

The basecoat (red) is paint+thinner, leave to dry matt, about an hour to make sure the solvents are evaporated, you can use a 'fast' thinner if you want.

The laquer is 2 pack because you mix hardener into it to make it go off (like filler) then thin it to suit, thinner always goes in last! usally 2:1:1 HTH!

I'll post the pics when it eventually goes right!!!

Thanks for everyone else's advice too...

im a painter so i usually spray in a oven but you spray on the base coat leave too dry about 15 20 mins then with a tac rag you carefuly wipe over the area thats just been painted and then blow off with a air line then if using 2 k lacquer mix it with hardner this must be used because the drying process is a chemical reaction

ooo foregot too say dont mix hardner with basecoat just the paint and thinners

Do you have to laquer solid colours, I thought it was only for metallics?

Don't have to,but you can!-needs keying first tho'!

We're only spraying in a garage though dude so we're reliant on the garage air temp and a warm day.. No ovens for us unfortunatly... :(

Just one last question, what do I ask for when I buy the hardner to go with the laquer??

solid coloers can be lacquerd but there usually 2k top so they dont need it metalics always need lacquering as there as there always basecoat

Thanks very much dude, and sorry to piss everyone one off here asking so many repeating questions but seeing as we're spraying in a garage and reliant on the ambient air temp, do we leave the red basecoat 20-30 mins to dry before applying the laquer or about an hour?? How many coats of laquer too or is it just a case of spray it on over covering the whole lot??

Leave it overnight mate,to be sure!-dropping cool now!

As for the laquer, put on a first coat lightly, covering the whole surface, allow to 'flash off''(depends on temp) then give it another coat, usally 3 coats will give enough to machine polish later.

i was once told to make the final laquer coat a bit thinner than the previous for a glossier finish , any truth in this paint gods?

Yep!-but I wouldn't risk it without an oven!!

Old 'celly' was best for this :)

Whenever i've done any panels of my own i've removed them where possible and warmed tham in the garage under High wattage halogen lamps before spraying...prior to any Laquer iv'e then either cut/keyed the panel next day and warmed again slightly before application....Time is the key to any spray job and without an oven even more time and patience is required!!

the problem with your paint mate is it has got wet. if it was in a cold garage with damp, condensation will have formed on the top of the lacquer and caused that effect. if the base coat was not dry before applying lacquer this would not of caused this effect.i used to paint for nissan last year and the clear coat is applied about 30 seconds after the base coat
