My recon prop arrived this morning and I'm about to book the Zed in at the same place that recently sorted out my suspension/wheel alignment.

These guys are supposed to be the best local performance car people, specialising in fast japanese but particularly evo's and supras.

They are also authorised Tein dealers.

Whilst changing my brakes last weekend I had a look at my front shocks (tein). Now, according to the garage in question. The front shocks are adjusted as high as they'll go (they even sugested the suspension could be the wrong ones for the car) yet you cannot get your hand in between the tyre and wheelarch.

Anyhow, looking at the shock, the height adjustment collar is right at the top of it's thread. Would this not suggest that the suspension is actually at it's lowest setting?? I can't quite get my head around it, but if that is the case I don't think I'll go back there with my new prop :nono:

sounds like they are real muppets mate.

I would take the car there and speak to the manager about it,

then, I would go somewhere else to sort out the prop LOL

Just come off the phone with them and I've been put in my place....

The weight of the car sits on the springs which are sitting on the collars. Therefore by threading the collar down the shock you lower the ride height of the car not vice versa. All makes sense now!!

Car is now booked in for the prop exchange :)

Duh

No thats complete *****X!!!!! The car will be at its highest when the collars are at the bottom of the thread NOT the top! IE more pre-tension on the spring.....

Dp?

God garages are pants. My normal local garage wouldnt touch the z. A friend recommended another local that did his clutch on his golf gti with no problems. I took the z there and they fitted my rps. I have now just booked my car in with zedworld as it has not been right since! They missed a bolt out of the gearbox mount, its making a rubbing noise from the prob and hesitating under high boost! The starter motor on my friends golf just broke as they missed a bush out when they put it back on!

Lucky I havnt paid them and im not planning to!

AAAARRRRGHGGHHHH!!!!!! :hurl:

I can't argue with this guy!!!

You absolutely sure about that.

My Teins are realy old, could they have worked the oposite way on early set-ups????

Not at all.... Absolutely 100% about it, unless you have the car on its roof. Its hard to describe but I'll try....

imagine the spring isn't there and its just a solid cylinder. As the collar is wound towards the spring, the length of the shock gets greater, therefore jacking the car up....

Does that make any sense?

Wires could actually be getting crossed here thinking about it, the highest ride height is achieved by winding the collar towards the spring....

NOW I'm COMPLETELY BLOODY CONFUSED!!!!

So are you saying you're now doing a U-turn and agreeing with the Tein dealer?

The collar is threaded as high up the shock as it will go yet the car still sits several cm lower than a stock Zed.

as you said in the first instance, if the collar is pressed up againt the spring what happens to the spring? it gets compressed what happens when a spring gets compressed? it becomes shorter? therefor if it becomes shorter then it also means the ride height will be lower, so if your collar is at the top then there talking out there arse,

there you go you answered your own question,

Also when a spring is compressed it gets stiffer!!-so winding the collars up to the spring increases R/H :wack:

highest ride height will be achieved by the collar being wound closest to the piston rod of the shock...

Nope, if you make the spring shorter it compresses it, so therefore more pre-tension, lifting the car....

'Tis wot I said/meant! :smash:

I was talking to Greg, thats why I quoted him ;) :D

of course, you could just wind it all the way to the other end and see if its lower or higher with your own eyes :p

.....and possibly not be able to get the car off the trolley jack  ;) :D

A friend of mine fitted coilovers to his supra and coundn't work it out, it took him weeks of tiny adjustments to get it set to somewhere drivable and he has resigned to taking iot to Tein to get set up properly.

So don't be down heartened sometimes its not just cut and dry.

never fitted coil overs but I would think that if the collars were at the bottom of adjustment the car will be lower, wind them up and it will raise the ride height. Remember the shocker rod will also move up or down, the spring dosent just compress

Nope, if you make the spring shorter it compresses it, so therefore more pre-tension, lifting the car....

me thinking backwards, in my head i was thinking if your compressing the spring you are also pushing the rod back in to shock! but in reality you are not, infact quite the opposite,as your increasing the distance from the bottom to the top

il get my coat :wack:

Spot on ;)

I didn't wanna mess with it myself as I paid to have it all set up and laser aligned etc... but in light of the confusion I might just mark it up where it is and then thread it down just to see what happens...

Bring back the leaf spring... :(

Ok, if the shock body is at the top, wind the collar down for increased ride height. If the shock body is at the bottom, wind the collar up for more ride height....

Hows that?
