Would You Install An Oil Cooler On A Auto Box... Or Not?

Sound's like a daft question to me but yes really... would you install an oil cooler on an auto box in a Z32 N/A????.

I ask this because I sent mine to a 300ZX specialist (apparently) to have a new radiatior fitted and after 6 months my auto box has packed up and today I realised he bypassed my trans cooler when he fitted the new rad.

This is the short story... the long story is is in the next posting for those interested. (I realise that somke like the short threads and some like the full technical story).

How many people have had an NA and had the auto box go?

When I got my NA I had an aftermarket cooler fitted within a month, the autobox went bang after about 3 years, in my mind it was the previous 13 years of driving with just the standard rad cooler that casued this.

exactly as dave marley said at the beginning of this text. the so called speciallist put a manual rad in and bypassed thye cooler (just looped the pipes back to the box).

AND when contacted he did say that the original coolers are not much cop anyway and the box probably failed for other reasons.

He does this type of fix all the time apparently... WOULD YOU TRUST HIM TO WORK ON YOUR CAR???

I would have to agree that its a stupid thing to do and the mechanic should of at least given the option of fitting an aftermarket cooler, but, as in my case there is still a good chance the box was already worn and on the way out. Not making an excuse for him as its the argument he will use. Also these are not Ford Mondeo's, owners need to know about their cars and be able to check things are done as they should be, what the weak points are and sort them before they become a problem, take some responsibilty for the upkeep of the car and it will reward you with many years of happy motoring. Thats just my opinion, but rip me to shreads over it of it makes you feel better :p

so where is my pictures of a standard autobox cooler?

You all got me worried now, my zed has had a new rad about a year before i got it and if the rest of the work that was done to it is anything to go by, mine could be bypassed.

What sould i be looking at to see if mines ok???

It's hard to say what causes it though.

I have a lot of faith in Nissan getting it right in the first place.

If I tuned my car, I'd get one but as standard I think its ok.

The 'you must fit one' is more based on heresay than fact as far as I can tell.

I think they got it right for the market it was aimed at, they dont seem to do any long journeys in Japan so the auto fluid doesnt get as hot for long periods.

If you can see two pipes going into the bottom of the rad then the chances are it still has the standard cooling, if the two pipes have been joined together then let us know and I will post up some pics of what u need to do.

sufolk zx .. yes its a stupid thing to do and since you mention it I do normaly keep on top of my cars. the fact is that I had recently moved house and also was having auto box trouble with my Cadillac STS and had that gearbox in a million bits on my workbench.

So I trawled this site (lots of trusted specialists on here aparrently) and got someone to do my ZX work for me.

sadly he wrecked my car due to the work he had done (he had also sold me a recon box a few months earlier) ... yes the box may have failed anyway as it was second hand but also the crappy fix he did would have made sure of that.

The fact is that when he gave me the car back he could have at least said "oh by the way I have disconected your autobox cooler" and I would have rushed out and bought an aftermarket one the same day. the fact is I trusted him to know what he is doing as he had a link on here at the time.

This is actually the first time in 16 years I have trusted an outside party to work on my car and I just realised why I stopped doing it then... you cant trust anyone.

oh by the way... the cadillac is now fine and that is after extensive autobox brain surgery by my self... so I do know what I am talking about.

wen i got my z about 1 month after box went so rang a couple of z specalists one say this that and the outher one says some thing else ? including uprating the box to take x amount of bhp faster shifts thro box ect

any way in the end rang a local gear box place that ive used for years he said yea he could do all the work and mod the box so off it went to him did not ask how long

2days later rang me u come and get it its done bin fine not a problem

thing to do from day one of buying a z

1 put a cooler on it! ( he say this)

2 change the box oil and do fillters ( dont put it off )

3 chek oil cooler lines or change them as well

the heat that is put out from the box is massive plus exhaust pipes runing so close to the box, transmision tunnel used to get red hot still get hot not as bad tho

you said you worked on v12 jags bud,was it on the wirral with or for "charlie" just a question as he used to look after my xjs about 12 years ago :D

It depends how you drive, i think as a preventative meaure it's worthwhile doing. mine has one fitted i think. it doesn't look like a nissan part. it's a small silver rad at the front under the bumper and the gearbox is way smoother than my black na which didn't have one.

Conclusive proof? I don't know, but worth while 80 quid to prolong the life methinks

No Z nut I was based in Knotty ash in liverpool when I used to do jags and worked from home. Always did it as a hobby really and made spare cash from it but was well trusted. I only moved house to the wirral in the last couple of years.
