I dont trust what the manual says...it definatly takes about 4 litres with filter.

Just use the dipstick (give the oil plenty of time to drain through though).

Yep, must admit, I've always put nearer 4 litres than 3 in it. However, the size of oil cooolers will make a difference.

After a Ztech rebuild I was told to put 4 litres in by the main man himself :)

Yep This is why I'm asking. To get it to register on the Dipstick I have to put in 4.25 Ltr's yet the manual says 3.4

I have a large 315mm X 25 row cooler, remote filter housing and running 1/2 inch system from the filter housing with dirrect return to the filter take off.

What I have found is that running the engine with this amount of oil results in high engine temps when giving it serious pain or crusing at 90 + mph. It also throws oil out the rear. Just little specs until the oil level drops to just showing on the end of the dipstick.

Once it got to this point it seems to stop throwing it out the back and the temps seem to become far more normal.

Talking to a friend who is a well known tunner he says its because I'm putting too much oil in and that at high revs the oil getting bashed about by the vanes of the crank are heating it up. This is causing too much heat for my system because the NA oil squirters are already transfering a lot of heat from the fordge piston heads.

The heat creats high oil presure and greater volume by expansion which causes it to be forced out anywhere it can. He recomends an expansion tank and less oil + maybe a bigger cooler.

Thoughts and experiences Please

P.S.

If what Dave says is true and us Brits have kept wacking 4+ltrs in and it is upping the heat, maybe that is why we have the heat issuse when the Yanks in Califonia Don't. Big problem though is like Phil at C & S Wood says. If its not showing on the dip stick how do you know if its using oil or not.

All problems of engine tuning.

but surely bigger cooler means more oil needed to show on dipstick again

No cos it should stay in the cooler Though the oil in the return pipe will feed back to the sump.
