Just been reading a thread saying too light steering may be releted to speedo conversion.

Mine's a fresh import fitted with uk clocks and speedo works ok. Will this still have a converter of some sort on it?

If so could this give the steering brain duff info so steering thinks car is going a lot slower than it is and increases power assist?

Could this also be why autobox can't make up it's mind whether to be in 3rd or overdrive?

Done some searches on this but still not figured it out.

If it's got uk clocks mate you don't need a convertor-yours has been done 'proper'! :)

Ok, good, but the steering is ultra light all the time. It's like driving on ice.

While you're there Manta, how did you get your speed sensor working after transplant?

Did you take the sensor off the box and point it at something else. Presumably it works similar to the abs sensors?

I thought that by fitting a convertor you affected the steering weight, hicas and cruise control etc as well as auto gearbox etc.

i'd say it's been de-restricted

Pretty sure it's got proper UK clocks. The kph instrument panel was chucked in the boot when I bought the car.

Did the import company do the conversion, not heard of Importers fitting an entire UK clock binnacle before....they are rare and hard to get hold of.

As far as I know a speed converter does not affect the steering as the steering gets it's signal before the speed converter. I've recently fitted a speed converter and ther was no difference to the feel of the steering.

...popular myth?

I've also run a speed converted ie Jap Auto for 6 years without any hassle from the converter ...cruise was fine too.

Can't tell of HICAS as both cars were na's.

Good luck

a dodgy/faulty speed convertor or wired wrong WILL effect the steering and the speedo, obviously if working properly no difference will be felt

Keith - try putting the original Jap clocks back in. See if that solves the problem. If it does then maybe a speed onverter on the original clocks is the answer - assuming it's fitted correctly.

Unfortunately the kph dash is in bits as I'm eventually fitting a complete digital system.

Did this in my Granada when I put the chevy in, cos I couldn't get the original gauges to work. Since I did it tho I found it so much better than dials and fingers that I want to do the Z too, when I swap the engine.

That's a few months away tho, so would like to understand how the steering electrics work, and hopefully get a bit of feel back to the wheel.

When i use the loud pedal full on i get the feeling the front of my zed gets light on the steering. Not sure if its a problem or not.

To be fair that could be the rear shocks bedding down on full boot matey. Could mean your shocks are cream crackered on the back :(

Ah ok. I did the simple press a corner down and see if it rises up smoothly which it does. But the back is light. Nearly lost it last night going up a hill, back bolted but i got it back.

Hmm new shocks.

Try here mate,http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=55295&highlight=steering+diagnostic

As for the speed sensor,it's a driven unit(not mag pick-up) so i had to 'make' a sensor using the Toyato drive unit and the Nissan sensor,it works fine and seems to be only 4mph out!! :)

Thanks. It's a bit clearer now. Just need to search for what signal should be present. Jeff says the signal is 5 volts but presumably it must vary a bit in either voltage or frequency to alter the steering weight.

Thanks again all. :)
