For immediate release 21st August 2006: Following a successful initial trial earlier this year, BP today announces that its ‘handmade’ BP Ultimate 102 Unleaded petrol is to be made more widely available across the UK. 102’s formulation meets exactly the same high specifications used in Formula 1 and the World Rally Championships.

The decision to target a further 30 sites follows extremely positive reaction from customers after the fuel was introduced at six locations in April this year.

The name ‘102’ refers to the octane number of the fuel - the highest octane available on any UK forecourt, while remaining ‘road-legal’. But high-octane performance is just a small part of the 102 story.

102 is unique in being crystal clear, a sign of the purity that leads to environmental performance in advance of any fuel offered on a UK forecourt. With less than 0.1 per cent benzene, it is the only automotive petrol available not classed as carcinogenic, and it’s also unique in containing a high performance ‘bio-component’ which works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

BP Ultimate 102 is intended for the growing numbers of highly tuned, high performance cars available, and in particular for use by drivers who like to take advantage of the increasingly popular ‘driving days’ on racing circuits – where peak performance is critical.

The price of the fuel, at £2.42 per litre reflects its very advanced components and small-batch production at BP’s Speciality Fuels Technology Centre.

Said Paul Beckwith, vice president of Fuels Product Management at BP: “The reaction to the introduction of Ultimate 102 Unleaded at eight sites earlier this year has far-exceeded our expectations and the decision to go ahead and target a further 30 sites is very much in response to this.

“102 is the definitive expression of our Ultimate range of premium fuels, which are designed to increase fuel economy as well as performance, and to offer fewer emissions.

“This fuel was developed to satisfy the need for an extreme high performance fuel that’s easily available to private motor sporting enthusiasts. People who invest in supercar-engineering naturally want to fill up with similarly advanced fuel, which has all the properties of the fuels used at the pinnacle of motor sport.”

BP Ultimate 102 Unleaded has been developed for vehicles tuned for increased performance. In the range of vehicles tested, where the ignition was re-mapped, Ultimate 102 gave typical power benefits of between 4.0 and 7.5 per cent above normal Ultimate Unleaded 97. On a very high performance, turbo charged vehicle, with boost pressure increased, the power benefits seen included an increase in maximum power of 37 bhp (8.6%), and as much as 60 bhp (16%) at some points in the engine speed range.

BP Ultimate 102 Unleaded has the highest octane rating available on any forecourt in the UK. It is the only service station fuel which truly reflects the properties of fuels used at the cutting edge of motorsport, making it the most highly specified unleaded fuel available at the forecourt.

BP Ultimate 102 is a precise recipe using a completely different manufacturing process compared to conventional refining. This processing results in a fuel with exceptional quality without the main impurities found in ordinary fuel. This is demonstrated by the crystal clear appearance, compared to the yellowish colour of typical petrol. It is the only forecourt fuel in the UK with this characteristic.

In addition to its unique performance qualities, BP Ultimate 102 is also less harmful to the environment than ordinary fuels:

Its unique purity and superior evaporation properties improve the combustion process in the engine, which means that less of the fuel is emitted as partially burnt pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons.

Its sulphur free formula will improve the operation of the catalytic converter, reducing exhaust emissions.

With less that 0.1% benzene, BP Ultimate 102 unleaded is safer to handle and less harmful to the environment and is the only automotive petrol not classed as carcinogenic.

The fuel contains a high performance oxygen containing bio-component, which means that overall greenhouse gas emissions – associated with global warming – are reduced, helping to protect the environment.[/

sheesh, sounds good. but at £2.42/litre i'll stick with tesco's 99 ron £1.03/litre!!

girlracer by any chance you tea leaf?

Now how would Mr Bunny know that? Been moonlighting have we ;) LOL

I will not repeat will not be buying any.

mmm id be tempted to try it but for over double the price of optimax only if I get double the bhp for my money! After a couple of days on that you could have bought something decent like an apexi for the extra money you spent!

u gotta be feckin joking !!!! No way would i pay that for petrol !!!! Nothing wrong with standard unleaded !!

I use super plus over here (100 octane) and my engine feels better for it. I do get it tax free though which helps. There is no way that I would pay £2.42 per litre, not even to try it. How much tax is the government going to take on that!

Car would need to be mapped to make use of the octane rating or you would see no benefit over 98/99 ron,. You would therefore need switchable maps to swap between.

They have had them at a Few stations local to Race tracks for a while now.
