I got onto the motorway yesterday and floored it, car went into power mode, got up to 70mph and eased off on the acelerator and the revs (on the meter) dropped to nothing but the car carried on at the same speed even when i took my foot totaly off the acelerator. got to a hill and went to accelerate a bit, nothing happened for a for the first bit of acelerator travel then revs shot back up to 5000 (so i seemed to only have a choice of 0 revs or 5000revs).

i carried on for a bit then pulled into the services (it has happened a couple of times before and stopping has seemed to fix it).

got out of the car to discover burning smell from under bonnet, engine was hot, fan running like mad blowing lots of hot air but radiator not perticuarly hot (as in i could touch it and fairly soon open it to check it had coolant). so i let it all cool down for quite a while and then drove off.

all seemed ok round the car park so went to leave, at the point where i would expect it to change gear there was a bit of a grinding / scraping noise from under the car so headed back to teh car park and continued the journey on the back of a recovery truck

so guys, whats the verdict?

torque convertor on the box failing? I'm only clutching at straws on that one bud. You need someone like soutwestzedmech or mickyb to answer that one
