Look like the Dean machine might be struggling for the European championships, managed to sustain a groin injury in his final training session :rolleyes:

 

I'm not a huge fan of athletics but the man himself is pure class some of his interviews are worthy of a medal on there own. Quotes like...

 

“I'd cut an arm off to win that gold medal. The pole vault would be difficult but that's a rubbish event for me anyway!”

 

On finally winning a gold:

"My dad nearly strangled me. I didn't want to cry and look like a jessie but I couldn't help it."

 

"It's not been affecting my sleep - well, unless dreaming of baby monkeys counts. I think psychologists would have a field day with that one - it might have something to do with my pole vaulting. I don't know."

 

 

Macey on his missus:

"I don't know why but when I'm injured I want to be horrible to everyone and she bears the brunt of it. To be honest, I'm surprised she even turned up on my wedding day - I've given her plenty of reasons to leave.

 

"But she's perfect. I get back from training, have a rant, finally shut up and she says: 'Are you done?' and then: 'Here's your tea' and that's that."

 

"On top of that, of course, I tell her I'm a hell of a catch every morning!"

 

While it's not exactly Oscar Wilde, he wears his heart on his sleeve, gives it his all for himself and for his country and unless he is sponsored by Elastoplast hasn't anything like as much as his contemparies in far less demanding disciplines.

 

I hope he gets to compete at something approaching his full fitness, he deserves something more than one major championship gold for all the potential and effort he has shown :duffer:
