Ive recently had the suspension changed from the horrible rock hard coilovers that it came with from Japan, to a setup suggested to me by Ryan at Ztech. This was to fit standard Nissan shocks and fit lowered Eibach springs.

I had them sent to me and fitted by a local garage. The rears went on no probs but they had to order extra bits for the front as the old setup did away with the standard plates, gaskets etc.

Everything seemed to be working fine however a few people commented on the way the central piston that sticks out of the top of the mount in the engine bay seemed to move up and down far too much when you bounced the car up and down. I did notice a squidgy sound when it was first fitted but it was not bad so i chose to ignore it!

Now after the suspension completing around 2000 miles there is horrible knocking noise from the front left and occasionally the right side! After it being inspected on ramps you can see how both side gaskets have split and failed thus causing metal on metal knocking!

Do you think the garage has screwed up and missed something out? Ive looked at a diagram that shows what should be fitted and it seems pretty straight forward! Have I been unlucky?

Does anyone have a link to some part numbers of the bits for the top front suspension so I can order them and make sure its right!

What bugs me more is what might of happened under hard driving! That possibly it could of failed and thrown me off the road! Nice to know what little garages know about these cars even to trust them to fit something as simple as the front shocks n springs!

Those gaskets always fail, and wont cause the knocking noise.

However Im a bit concerned about the movement you mentioned of the top of the strut in engine bay - there should'nt be any movement ! Check the Bolt at the top of the strut is tight.

It was like that when it was fitted so nothings come loose or failed! Im betting somethings missing! The thought of which scares me a little!

deffo soundz like bits missing.

The stock set-up has two thick rubber thingys either side of the top plate and a large washer under the nut. The lower is the bumpstop. There are also big rubber do-nuts between the springs and the top plates.

Any metal on metal is bad.........can someone post a graphic here?

you're probably missing the top mounts. Had something similar myself about 3 years ago, swapped coilovers out for standard stuff, drove the road and had 2 holes in the bonnet as the piston was free to move

It's the Upper plate in this picture, it will be part of the coilover if they have pillowball top mounts and would have been removed.

Thanks for help guys. Craig-s your more than welcome mate id appreciate the help. The more I discuss this with folk at work the more it seems possible the lowered eibach spring might be too short for the standard nissan shock! However, I am told from a good source that this combination works fine! Its booked in next week by the people who fitted it to start with so if anything is missing or fitted wrong etc at least they will put it right for nothing (and correct) !

And from the amount of strut thread showing and the fact the tops all nice and shiny suggesting it's been rubbing against sumit rubber.

Quite clearly shows on the exploded diagram that my plate is upside down! Wait till I get it back to the garage that fitted it!
