I have a 1995 mark 4 TT with black light weight recaro seats. I think they are from a later model car.

I was thinking of buying an old set (1991) electric, and getting them recovered in leather as mine are OK fo an hours drive but after 3 hours or so are a bit uncomfortable (so my other half tells me).

Are the 1990 seats the same shape and design as later models or did they change? Don't want to buy old ones to recover if newer ones are a better design.

Also can you get an electric passenger seat or use 2 drivers seats ?

The standard Z seats where all the same apart from the slight change with the tweed seats to a more softer type from Series 2 onwards I believe. Another change was that the series 2 seats where all electric (both passengers and drivers) where as the series 1 where just drivers side.

Of course you can't use a drivers seat for a passenger's side... the seat belt clip is bolted on the wrong side! =P As for the Recaros they where for the Version-R 300ZX which you should have!

95 onwards came with optional recarco's for the version S, and in 1999 I believe they were available in the version R. You'll probably find the stock zed seats more comfortable and they are a nice design. Not sure if they would be as supportive though and presuably a lot heavier.

Electric passenger was available from late 92(series 2) onwards.

Would you be interested in selling your seats?

the UK seats don't have adjustable lumbar support

the latter model import seats don't have adjustable bolster width

the electric passenger seats only have slide and tilt back controls but not raise / lower the back and front of the seat that the driver seat has. if your passenger likes a very upright seat then they may not find enough adjustment

Not sure if I should sell my own seats or not?

I assume they would be worth quite a bit as they are very lightweight and quite rare. Also being mainly black would match any other car.

More than stock tweed, but prob no more than stock leather. The trouble is Recaro's were fitted to everything from Escorts to Evo's. They have a good brand name, but readily available.

Worth more to a zed owner than any other car though, becuase of the specific Seat subframes that are hard to obtain for the 300zx.

So how much is that?

I have now purchased some MK3 seats (twin electric) to recover in leather.

My original idea was to keep the Recaro's and put them back in if and when I sell it in the future. Then to sell my newly covered seats. But if I can get a fair bit for the recaros it may be better to sell them now?

Put it this way, the subframes brand new are at least £130 for a single side, coupled with the fact that the Recaros that where on the Zed are worth about £250 second hand for the pair you can figure it out! Personally I ditched my Z leathers for recaros, holds you in better.

So I should be asking something like £400+ for front and back? That does not sound too bad.......

I think a realistic price would be around £300+. Though it might be a better idea to sell the frames separately as the seats can be sold for almost £250 on ebay from what I've seen.

Had an offer of £400 for them so far.

Can I offer an alternative view?

Keep the seats and replace them when you eventually sell the car as it would keep the Version R model you have 'correct'. I am only saying this because I have run into this issue when selling an 'edition' car before and punters repeatedly turning away because some detail was not right and they then put 2 and 2 together and get 5. (car must be nicked, re-built wreck etc.) :headvswal

You obviously have a great reason for wanting to change the seats but my advice is find a corner of the loft bag em up and keep the recaros as you wont get what they are really worth anyway. and if you still have them at re-sale it just adds to the sale. IMHO

If is not a genuine version R ignore what I said and sell them.......

Yes they are the original seats and what you suggest is what I was originally going to do. My reason for changing is quite simple, the seats are great support and are comfortable for an hour or two. But I must agree with my passengers Whan I have travelled for over 3 hours then you are begining to think you wish the had more padding. Also there is not much you can do with them without spoiling them e.g. leather.

So I have taken the plunge, bought a set of black cloth from a 1994 MK3 with both electric front seats and am going to get them retrimmed in black and grey, the car is silver.

I am now inclined to sell as I now realise their value and I have a loft full of stuff I am saving, some from cars I sold over 10 years ago!

I will post up some pictures wihin the next week and will be open to offers. I already have some offers but want o sort out pictures first so there is no question as to which seats they are.

Probably too late to keep car original as I have added a 99spec bumper and smoothed out the stone chip.
