i know this has probably been done to death, but was looking at some old mags earlier and noticed that compared with the more obvious "supercars" of its day the z32 stands up pretty well.

for instance look at these stats:

Lamborghini Diablo 0-60 4.3secs

Lamborghini Countach 0-60 4.9secs

Lotus Esprit turbo 0-60 4.9 secs

Honda NSX 0-60 5.2 secs

Porsche 911turbo 0-60 5.3secs

Nissan 300ZX TT 0-60 5.5secs

Ferrari 308 GTS 0-60 5.5secs

Ferrari 348 tb 0-60 5.6secs

Ferrari testarossa 0-60 5.7secs

Porsche 944turbo 0-60 5.7secs

be interesting how many secs it is off the modern day versions of the above cars.

im not sure myself if it could be classed as a "supercar" becuase of the price tag, maybe if Nissan had put an extra £50k on top of the £35k than it would have been.

but it performs like a "supercar" and looks like a "supercar" so 2 out of 3 aint bad, so for now i think il say its a definate supercar of the 90s at least.

what you reckon.

cheers

i never said or thought the zed was a supercar i was just comenting on how well it stood up to the supercars OF ITS DAY. and who knows with a diferent badge on the bonnet maybe it could have been.

so maybe we should finaly draw a line under this thread or even this subject.

the 300zx is NOT a supercar, never has never will be!

anyway im off now to wash and polish my "SUPERCAR"

No niether would i, but if the Z had a higher price tag like the NSX it would have been more desirable because not as many people would have had one, the zeds only .3 of a sec behind it in the 0-60 stakes. so its not exactly been left behind.
It wouldnt have made any difference. If you havent noticed almost all of the 'Supercars' have some sort of sports heritage. The Z from what I know of doesnt have that. Not only that, it doesnt help with the fact that the Z came in many different forms... 2+2, 2+0, convertable, TT form, NA form... it just dilutes it. How many supercars do you see with that many different body options! The Z was never made as a supercar... more a GT car instead.

As for the NSX, they did have help from a certain F1 driver and the car was designed in that respect. The Z how ever wasnt. So does that make the Skyline GT-R a supercar? NO it doesnt!

Personally, I dont give a shit if it's not a supercar or not. All I know is that I'm quite happy with the looks on people's face when they say "It's only got a Z badge... what is it?".

Its not to do with heritage, since Nissan and the Z-car range have a vey long running sports and racing heritage, especially compared to any other Japanese model.

The Z-car heriitage is one the good things about the Marquee compared to its competitors.

Ah, some sanity at last!

is that a no then,,,well ive said this before if it had a prancing horse on the front different story

that could be easily done, they been doing it to mr2s for years silly chuffs lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I Had A 944 Turbo Before The Z Tt And It Was Ok Pretty Quick, But The Z Is A Better Car For Sure,i Would Say That It Is A Poor Mans Super Gt Rather Than Atrue Supercar.the Performance Is Rather Like A Supercar But Unfortunatley We Live In A Shallow World Where Branding Seems To Count.

As I Am Getting A Bit Older And Shallower I Think The Dayz Of My Zed Are Numbered,i Have Found Enthusiasm To Finish Mine Recently, but I Am Constantly Wanting More. Once You Have Driven A True Supercar The Enthusiasm Starts To Fade And Reality Starts To Hit You,,,its Just A Nissan!!!!!! Love It Though.

Hi

A friend of a friend of mine has just got a 350. My friend - to wind me up I'm guessing - said he bets the 350 is faster than mine.

The Nissan web site says 0-62 in 5.9 sec.

Above says 0-60 in 5.5 sec.

I'm guessing the latter time was was when they were new, so what do you think my 1989 stock twin turbo fairlady does?

I will find out for sure on the 9th of Sept when I join you guys at the rolling road, but would be interested in what you think.

Spencer

my mum puchased a a350z about a month ago it is a very nice car and more than adequate, but not quite a tt. i must say i prefer the ride on the 350z though, maybe that is becuse it is fairly new,and my suspension is set too hard!!!.word has it that the engine in the 350z is was derived from a reno val satis and not zx!! i was told this by a mechanic who knows what hes on about and is a z enthusiast and a member of this forum. That comment should get people talkin!!!

Yep, well known but the other way around, The Reno val satis uses the 350z engine.

thanks for that bit of info, your z is looking real nice.hopfully mine will soon!!!!

Again, not all ferrari's are supercars. If the Zed was made by ferrari it would still not be a supercar  Please will people find out what a supercar is, its not a badge.

I wouldn't term the Zed a supercar, it's a high performance sports/GT car in my view. I see a supercar as a vehicle that's been designed with as few compromises as possible in order to extract the best performance from the available components. I mean, the Zed was designed for Americans fer chrissakes. Would a 80/90s Ferrari have been compromised as such? The 80s Countach was designed to make people go 'WOW' and go as fast as possible and to hell with fitting a driver in it.

I've been lucky and have driven quite a few of the past supercars including the Countach (such a recalcitrant and difficult barsteward of a car), Testarossa (heaviest low speed steering I've ever tried), 80s 911 Turbo (scariest car in the wet ever!), Porker 959 (massively fast but noisy bugger), Ferrari 308 (felt the biggest knob in it as it was the late 80s and in red) but they all had 1 think in common which was that they were built with a clear goal in mind to extract the max performance and handling which were basically those companies ethos.

Also, in general, supercars are made by companies that specialise in super cars. People associate Ferrari with supercars because that's the only thing they make, the same with Lambo. With Nissan, most people think Micra, Sunny or Bluebird before the image of a ZX ever crosses their minds. That's probably why the NSX was a failure commercially as the market the car was aimed at found it hard to not think of the Civic first.

At the end of the day, it's just a perception and if you love your Zed, who cares what others think :)
