Hi folks, just picked up my Z from having a major service and just thought I'd try and get an idea how well I did pricewise. My Mechanic (he's like a greasy pet lol) is a private garage but he worked for nissan for 15 years and ids fairly well Z experienced. The job was... oil, oil filter, sparkplugs, air filter, cambelt, air-con belt, pas belt and alternator belt, and front brake pads.... always keeps all the old bits to show me what he's done... £200 labour , £211 parts, inc VAT. total £411 inc vat.

 

I reckon thats ok... what do you guys think?

Very good.

 

I paid £400 for:

Oil/filter change

Gearbox oil change

Differential oil change

Brake bleed

Clutch fluid bleed

New brake pads

Platinum spark plugs

That sounds about right, although I would'nt of replaced cambelt without replacing water pump (they both have the same lifetime).

Same here. my water pump gave out last month, approx 18 months after doing the cambelt

why change the water pump if its not leaking.if it goes you dont have to take the cambelt back off.fairplay mate your guys charged a good price.if it aint broke dont mend it.

exactly!! You need to remove the crank pulley and lower cambelt covers to get to the water pump. Also when removing the pump will contaminate the current belt with coolant so you may as well change it while your there. I did!

Hmm think i would double check that you have deffo got a cambelt there mate, that price is VERY good to include a cambelt swap, which as others as said, when you do this belt, other items are usually done as a matter of course.

I normally charge about that sometimes less. Depends on what needs doing, changing.

i change the oil, filters and coolant every 3000/4000 miles. depends on what you class as a major service.

6000 miles or 6 months (might be 12 months)

considering its Exactly the same labour! - Not sure why then you think that the above 5 hours labour charge for cambelt change, oil change and front pad change was a good deal then !

chuffin ell your mans quick ! even our own traders would be hard pressed to remove shroud, viscous fan, drain coolant, PTU and other electrical harnesses, remove water inlet pipes, remove cam covers an dthen finally remove the pump, re fit in reverse and re fill coolant and check,

This is 1 reason why i questioned the cambelt, cos you gotta do this at least just to get to it...

erm think we got crossed wires here bud, no one is saying 1.5hrs for a cambelt, am saying it's more than 1.5hrs just to get the pump and get it off, the cambelt being a bit more involved should be even longer again.

All pete and i were saying 1.5 hrs for a water pump, then he will make a few bob from peeps here as it is very very quick !!

i think you should leave posts like these dave for people who have done cambelts etc.if you check the nissan manual there is no mention of removing the cambelt to do a pump.the picture in the manual states to remove covers etc.but the belt does not have to be taken off.

what we are saying is to be 100% certain, change the belt while you are there for the sake of £40.

 

Its a precautionary measure passed down from many a cambelt changer from 300zx.co.uk history.

No ones really bothered about the cambelt bud, YOU said that it only takes 1.5hrs to do the waterpump swap, we're just saying that is almost impossible ( without fooking up) to do it in that time, hence the reason for doing whilst the guy did the cambelt, geez.......

James, not thats its relevent but I have done several Z32 cambelt changes myself, watched about a dozen being done and even shown a few owners how to do it themselves !!! My Shop is in the building next door to a 300zx specialist garage.

 

Cambelt and Waterpump involve the exact same labour.

 

Removal off :

 

Fan shroud & Viscous fan

Radiator

Water pipes

PAS, Alter, AC belts

Crank pulley

covers

 

I've not said the cambelt needs to come off thats a 10 sec on top of the above labour for both jobs...and thats the point !

coolant bud is not considered a problem to the rubber of a cambelt if its only a quick splash.oil is the biggest killer.
