went to matlock yesterday then the clutch decided to fail.

no pedal stiffeness whatsover, checked reservoir and it was empty.

Used a locking wheelnut as a scoop and took some of the dot4 from my brake fluid and half filled the clutch reservoir with it :)

pressed the clutch down and it all emptied, looked under car and big puddle.

somethings broken somewhere methinks.

got home by selecting 1st gear when engine was off then starting in gear and it jumps forward and presto - your moving, then 2nd and 3rd gear changes without clutch

Problem is M1 has roadworks hence a lot of the time as we slowed down I put hazards on and undertook albeit it at a few mph on the hard shoulder.

You know the sorta dirty looks you get from people when they dont know you have no clutch.

Stopped at a motorfactor and got some dot4 hoping to get enough in just to get me on the final leg home. nope, all i succeeded in doing was jumpstarting the car in 1st again off the kerb cracking the only good sideskirt I had.

eventually got home, but have now noticed rear tyres are bald on the inside.

This is due to camber on rear being wrong - Not having this adjusted yet, as inner bushes are out and they are being swapped over next week sometime.

So I need

Fix Clutch reservoir/pipe

2 new tyres

fit new hicas arms/bushes then 4 wheel alignment.

fix up bodywork

very disheartened now :(

Jay ive got my head in my hands reading that :(

dont get too disheartened tho - much worse can go wrong with a Z than that! im sure you can get it back to full glory in next to no time.

It could be your engine matey so that's a positive for you :)

I know what it's like though, i've had my car 3/4 weeks and already had to spend 600 quid on a new rear suspension and hicas arms

Mate you should see some of the people that come in the garage having just bought a 4k car and saying can you just check it over. Then I have to tell them they need to spend some serious money on it. It makes me feel like a right bas****. Ur car sounds like it just needs a bit of TLC.

Yeah it will have, i'm lavishing it with all sorts of nice stuff when i get it driving right.

I'm happy the state it's in now for 4100 including that mot just annoying that was all waiting to happen at the mot

Sorry to hear about it mate, but as said its not that bad compared to what it could be with a Zed (or any car for that matter). It may be a hassle but its a very cheap one compared to some.

Just to be on the safe side, it might be an idea to get a garage to confirm that the clutch has gone - there's a chance you'll be reported for driving on the hard shoulder as the M1 is completely monitored now!

cheers Rich - will do ;)

I know they're not really expensive bits - just get down with it sometimes - there always seems to be *something* not right with these cars.

forgot to mention fan belts slipping too :)

Gonna give meself a break for a few days then get me head stuck in and get em all sorted.

Dont wanna go on a downer in weather like this :)

Jay, it's most likely the clutch slave cyl has gone rather than the pipe burst, MJP can do a seal kit for it for a few quid and its easy to remove / replace.

Cheers fella, how do I test?

is the slave cylinder bolted onto the gearbox?

Yes! take off the slave cylinder and prise back the dust cover to see if fluid has seeped past the seals and if it has the seals are gone! if not its ok!
