Always has been and always will be, 'BLADE RUNNER'. Nothing ever comes close. Watched it last night for the first time in about a year and it reminded me how brilliant this film is. Hard to believe that it was made nearly 25 years ago.

Reason for the thread...I watched it again last night...but for the first time in about a year.

I know Chewie is a fan of it like me.

I've actually had the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen about 10 years ago, when my local cinema started re-screening some of the classics. Was breath taking then.

Don't think anything will come close, although I do have a lot of favourites, just nothing that'll ever top this film.

Great film not sure about the best ever made though. its definately the best vision of a future especially considering when it was made. Too be honest when I watch it I always feel its a bit TOO atmospheric, so atmospheric and moody that it borders on boring.

Rutger Haurs (?) best role to date though.

I love the deep dark underworld feel you get from it. One of the best elements is the way the film feels. I get totally engrossed in it because of that.

...Vangellis also couldn't have got it anymore spot-on with respect to the film if he tried.

I didn't like it myself, but then i'm a Lord of the rings fan

So am I. Two totally different films. I love Fantasy as much as I love Sci-Fi.

never actually seem blade runner but my vote for best film ever made in the whole universe ever goes to the godfather (1&2 combined because that makes the full story)

To be fare I tried to watch it when I was a kid and got bored, so maybe a second viewing is in order.

As for sci-fi, well star wars, what more can be said.

It's too deep and meaningful to be understood by younger kids maybe, although I first watched it when I was about 10 and absolutely loved it then. But I'm a bit of an oddball when it comes to film choice. I tend to like the more obscure and 'different' types.

must watch that again then - i havnt seen it for ages, and remember being suitably impressed by the work that had gone into it but not enjoying it as a film as much as some others.

i think that there is such a variety of genres now that its almost impossible to have a "favourite film" or to label a film as the best ever made. I personnally will enjoy different films more at different times depending on my mood and that has no bearing on the quality of the film. my personal favourites include -

Star Wars, the original, much better than any of the others made recently! Watch it and cant believe the film is 2 years older than me!

Twelve monkeys/fifth element - both just confused the hell out of me when i first watched them! admittedly havn't aged very well, but still find them enthralling

Crash - a fantastic concept which i was completely engaged in, feel gutted i didnt see it at the cinema. (oh, and no not the one where they shag each others wounds :D )

Saving private ryan. The scene on the beaches :bow

The Green Mile - outstanding

Anything by pixar/dreamworks!!!

just read this post back to myself and noticed something - I really don't rate tom hanks as a actor, yet he appears in 2 of my favourite all time films, Yet the actor i regard as the most talented (Johnny Depp) is nowhere!

Jonny Depp, now he is a very good actor and often overlooked, I'm a Mel Gibson fan not for his acting (he only plays one carractor) but the films he plays in are great.

Legends of the fall  and Brad Pit is very good.

and Brad Pit is very good.

Fight Club

I went to the pictures to see it when it first came out

me too :x:

it is a top film

Blade Runner is a classic and no mistake (though has to be the directors cut without the added voice over...)

Too many to narrow it down for me but stand out films in my mind are:

Leon

Fight Club

Empire Strikes Back

Donnie Darko

The Life of Brian

28 Days Later

The Shawshank Redemption

Eraserhead

Blue Velvet

in the name of my fatther

my left foot

dances with wolves the special edition version

mohican

hunt for red october

shawshank redemption

green mile

armageddon

theres a ton more, but i cant say one is the top, they all need to be watched over and over!!

Shawshank Redemption

Leon

Life Of Brian

thats why i don't think you can put forward one film as the best ever made - id completely forgotten about these yet each are just as good as the ones on my list!

Have to say iv never seen Donnie Darko - what makes it so good?

Shawshank redemption is a Fantastic film

I went to pictures to see that as well went in cos the one I had gone to see was full, was blown away when I came out

Usual suspects is another top film

I always liked schindler's list, excellent film. In fact most things with ralph fiennes, english patient is my favourite.

Difficult to sum up the essence of Donnie Darko! You have to resort to contradictions! It's dream-like but coherent, existential yet grounded (mystical concepts yet still rooted in reality: it's still about kids growing up and trying to cope with life), the cinematography is first rate, the 80's setting resonates with me (the references and music used are spot on...ie the reworking of Tears for Fears "Mad World" plus countless other more instantly recognisable scores) and the weirdness quotient is set just about right for my (slightly bizarre admittedly) tastes. :D All in all a very moving film that just works SO well. Plus Drew Barrymore as eye candy (albeit a bit wooden in places!) :D

I've seen Blade Runner about 10 times love it. Love the camera work, the atmosphere, the story line, the symbolism, the acting oh I could go on forever. So I'd better shout you now LOL
