"Just like most ground wire kits, power comes from where you ground the wires. We found that grounding near the alternator and spark plugs works great but placing them near crank triggers tends to make power erratic."

Found this info while searching the web and wondered if anyone had tried moving round the grounding kits on the zed? I brought my car with one already fitted so no idea where they should be, just wondering what other guys have grounded?

I did wonder if they added any power, but as the car has one fitted might as well have it connected in the right places

grounding kit = gimmick

No it isn't and is the best way to avoid Heater matrix and steel pipe work corrosion. Due to the fact that the spaggetti of wires that suround the engine + static creat an electric field which tries to dishcharge itself via you cooling system.

Also poor earthing will shorten the life and the performance of all your electrics. I still haven't fitted mine but one day I will.

We will have to disagree on this then, the only use for them in my eyes is for a bit of 'bling'. I've also heard a few people who seem to think they actually have a detrimental effect on the electrics.

Mr Toyota obviously thinks differently and with his resorces and know how I'll goo along with his argument. + I'll post up some pics later of what Mr Toyota does to his factory racing spec Celicas. Grounding everything including every coil pack.

If you have bad earths on your car then it may help put it back to factory spec but they don't increase power.

Everything that needs to be earthed was wired up at the factory.

What the hell is a grounding kit?

Grounding kits do work, especially on 15+ year old cars

grounding kit = gimmick

Disagree, if your eathing points are dirty and starting to corrode they will supplement the poor connections. Of course, you could track all these down and clean them but it's easier to bolt new ones on as well.

However, I'd be pretty sceptical about them making any difference on cars just a couple of years old.

And does it matter where they are all conected? Or just as long as they are off to several different points in the engine bay it should work?

I think it does matter, Components with a big current draw should be those which are grounded/in proximity of the grounding points.

Im Surpised Pete shrimp hasnt been on to tell the pros and Con of grounding kits - seeing he actually sells the things.

Also, as a seller of grounding kits, it would be a great idea if here were to Dyno a 300zx TT with before and after results - but at the end of the day, that would only achieve 1 of 2 things - 1. they work on a 300zx 2. they dont work on a 300zx

the later probably being bad for business :-))

It is not in his interests to try and prove if they do anything or not, he owuld probably go out of business ;)

Right, so what should we be grounding? Im guessing the engine itself not a bad place to start, plus one down near the headlights would help, what about the rest?

right , the better the earth any electrical system has in a car the less strain put on the cars electrical system , make it easier for the earth and you will find better idle, cant say you will gain power cause you wont but you will help the system nissan designed

Just noticed this thread :) Yeah I'm used to the sceptical remarks, some whole forums slate them, though very rarely has anyone actually bought one and not had a good thing to say, often people are amazed at the engine response/starting improvement shown.

As Andy says above, yes you'd probably get the same response by renewing all your earth wiring etc but which is the simpler/cheaper job? :wack:

Additional earths do make a difference. Nismo do a kit for the 350Z which you can buy through Nissan, they're obviously confident they work on new cars. The biggest gains are obviously seen on older cars where you're adding brand new high quality cables to supplement/replace the tired, corroded standard cabling.

Manufacturers don't use the highest quality components everywhere on a car, they compromise to allow prices to be competitive. The quality of my Voodoo cables are ridiculous overkill hehe

As Mark says, poor earthing, although not poor enough to be noticable, has been blamed for radiator and heater matrix degradation. I won't pretend to know why but there are a few threads on it if anyone wants to search :)

Re dyno testing - I can safely say that many cars will show no difference to power, and some would show an increase at least somewhere on the power curve if not across it. Of course I'm not going to test this as I'd need a massive sample of cars to rule out air temp/oil temp/etc differences between dyno runs. Anyone who has has a dyno session will know you don't get the same consistent result every run. Your arse-dyno will usually feel an improvement though :p

Any power increase would usually be down to the grounding kit 'fixing' a poor earth - no bad thing.

Power increases aren't what they're about anyway, I only mention that area because the topic always comes up in discussion. One days I'm going to have a proper dig through my inbox archives and put a feedback page on the site, there's some great comments esp from Skyline R32/33 GTR owners, they love them.
