I'm perplexed... is this a love it or leave it proposition...

 

I have been looking for a good '95 or '96 SWB or Slicktop without a whole bunch of luck. closest I found was a 1999 slicktop for £10K.. but don't like the whole 'Model report' gamble/expense

 

A friend has a very standard 1989 SWB NA with 50,000 on the clock. It's been sitting in his drive for about 2.5 years with the occasional start. The interior is... well... 17 years old. The body... well needs a re-spray... Shocks and everything else for that matter... look old. and tired.

 

I can buy it for £700.00 and then.

 

Get a £1700 full re-spray for about £900 through a mate who owes me one.

replace all the bushes, shocks, drop a very good TT lump (currently have) in it, new seats, etc.

 

 

With the wealth of experience in this forum with these types of projects... is it worth-while... or a complete pain in the butt when in the end you are left with a 17 year old car when all is said an done???

 

should I just keep looking to find a £4-£6K Gem with under 30,000 miles on the clock.. or give Ryan at Z-Tech a load of work ???

Best thing to do is to make a list of how much it will cost. Most cars that need work turn out to be a can of worms. I don’t know much about N/As, are the brakes the same as a turbo?

 

Do you have an ECU for a turbo? I think you’ll fine it might be a lot of work. Having said that the car is very cheap. I got a gem of a car in amazing condition and I’ve still spent a load on it.

 

For the amount of money your spending you should get a gem, or pay a bit less for a car that just needs minor things doing.

 

I’ve put a lot of time into my car (because I did it all myself). You do get sick of working on it sometimes.

 

All you think about is driving it.

 

If the cars over 60k it must have had the major service (timing belt etc) if it has that will save a few pounds.

I think converting a good NA to a TT will cost about £5K.

 

So doing that to a rough one plus making it good will cost a fookin fortune.

 

Maybe the club can get the model report and rent it out to people. I think it can afford it and it'd probably make the money back or make a profit even. Plus it'd be great for the club.

Yes... that sounds great. I would much rather just spend the wedge and get a 6 or 7 year old car than start pumping money into a 17 year old one....

I got mine about three years ago before the rules changed.

 

I dunno who we speak to. It's possible but it'll take some persuading...

 

I did suggest it as a question for the AGM but I don't know if it came up.

 

I guess the committee / club chairman. AndyP is treasurer and a very reasonable bloke so he might be the first port of call.

 

We could put up a poll, seing if members thought it was a good idea.

 

It's far from certain though.... but I do know lots of members would be interested.

 

I do wonder if it happened if the club would have to go for a TT LWB car as they're the most common - I don't know if a model report would cover all variants.

yes... I wondered that also. I'm going to call around to some of these SVA centres who claim " Model Reports for Many Vehicles" and see what they have to say.

My advice - don't bother buying your mates one and waste the money bringing it up to standard.

 

At the end of the day it is a 17 year old car that will have cost you £000's yet still not be worth the money you ploughed into it.

 

Buy a good one in the first place - yes finding the right one will be hard but it will cost you less in the long run.
