What version of windows are you running mate? You might be able to boot it into safe mode and then thats a good starting place to try and repair windows.

If its xp/2k or NT then you could also try the "Press spacebar for last know configuration" option during start up (think its space anyway..)

HTH

its xp mate, wont boot in safe mode, tried last known config, also tried repair from disc with no joy.

tried to install new while leaving files intact, and wont allow unless i lose everything

I had a similar problem with my desktop PC. The easiest way to recover it turned out to be to add my HD to my girlfriend's PC as a slave. Her PC said "ooo that disk's a bit fecked mate, let me sort it out for you... [grind, whirr] ...all sorted mate, there you go".

Put it back in mine and it's been fine ever since.

Bit more tricky with a laptop though, but you can get 2.5" to 3.5" converters to plug it into a desktop. See if anyone else has any bright ideas first though...

Last known good config prob wont work as you need to select it the very first time you have problems. If it wont let you rebuild it then the best way to recover your work is to do what Mark said. Buy a 2.5 to 3.5" adapter and take your drive out and put it into a desktop PC as a second drive. Then get all your bits off it.

I can help you run through it if you do decide to do this, or you can send it to me if you buy the adapter? I had an adapter for ages but I picked it up recently and it had broke which is a bit of a b*gger.

If you have an xp disc put it in and choose R for repair, you may need to know the administrator password think it will ask for it?

Once in use the command

chkdsk /r

let it run away for an hour or so doing its stuff, once it is done use the command

fixboot

it will ask if your sure and just put y (return) and that take 2 secs to do. turn off laptop, take xp disc out tun on cross fingers.

If you get lost on any step give me a buzz
