right, i've only owned my zed for a week now, when i bought it there was a hum coming from the rear of the car. the seller told me it was the centre propshaft bearing and included the new part in the sale.

i fitted the bearing today and all was looking well.

however, the noise remains, and as well as that, there is a vibration coming from it now!!

the seller told me he initially thought it was a wheel bearing, and had this replaced, but it never solved it. i dont know which side it was though.

the noise appears to be coming more from the left hand side.

Do any of you guys know what would be causing the hum or now the vibration also?

help is greatly appreciated in advance.

i thought that after replacing the bearing you had to have it re-balanced again?? im probably wrong though

No, but you should mark up the position it was in before unbolting it, and put it back together with the marking lined up again....or it will be out of balance and cause vibration.

Also have to make sure the washers go back in the same place.

Other prop vibration problems are the UJ's and the gearbox mount collapsing.

i guess its coz we never marked it! if i move it on a bolt will it be ok?

any ideas on the hum?

There's 4 positions so you might be lucky on the first go but it's going to be a pain in the ass to do lol

Could be a worn diff or something.

Is it a mechanical noise or could it be a noisy fuel pump?

would the diff whine? had it on ramp today, i think it is coming from the back prop, just before the diff, but a collegue thought it definately sounds like a bearing? is there a bearing on the front end of the diff?

definately not a wheel bearing and its definately either diff bearing or rear prop!

any more help appreciated! i'll leave the lining up the prop for balance until i find the part that is causing the noise!

you should see two plates on the prop and they normally go together and if you have it wrong the prop will only go 180 o til the correct position so cant really get it wrong now. This could still be making the vibration and the noise. Could still be wheelbearing as for some reason zeds dont really show movement but can still be fooked.

it isnt wheel bearing, i had car running through every gear with the back wheels off the ramp and it was definately propshaft or diff!

also guys, any idea on how much for right hand side hicas arm?

Hicas arms are approx £50+vat.. speak to Mike @ MJP (In traders section)

cheers, been studying carfische diagrams of props and diff, i really am confused by this!! cant see what is wrong!! doesnt feel like the diff is making the hum because it feels to be running smoothly to touch!

oh, here is a picture of my zed!

i'm not subscribed but i'll just post this one up here!

Phone me tomorrow after 12 mate. Was up to my eyes today.

Marty

prop is still vibrating, tried moviing it about five different positions, think i found an old match mark and hav it lined up to that at the moment. i think the whine is coming from th diff now so will be replacing it soon.

not sure wether to buy a second hand prop and put my new centre earing onto it and hope for the best or just get mine rebalanced.

marty anymore info on when you and colin? can have a look at her?

Have you put the large spacer washers back in the correct place?

They will fit either side of the centre bearing bracket so it's possible to fit it back out of line.

Can't see your prop has gone out of balance?

at the start, we thought there was only one spacer (we never saw the second washer fall!) so we built it up and i drove about 10 miles with it like this, but the shaking was severe so we disassembled it and found the illusive second spacer and built it again, there was no shake when i accelorated then and i thought it was ok, but after 40 mph the shaking was still there!

as i have said, we had match marked the two flanges, but failed to mark where the flange went on the propshaft after the centre bearing, so i guess this is the problem?

has anyone else had a problem or had noise from bearings in their diff?
