Hi guys, desperatly need some advice as im mid through (fooking!) my big brake upgrade..

I got the old disc and the caliper off without too much hasstle and thought all was going well. Came to fit the bracket for the caliper and realised i didnt have a 10mm allenkey for the those bolts. Thankfully a neighbour had one so got on with fitting the bracket. Thing was no matter how tight i tried to get those bolts the bracket was never really firm against the car and you can twist it!

Its as if it needs an extra washer, but clearly that will adjust the spacing of the caliper. Im worried now i might have stripped the threads out of the zed in either getting the caliper off or in putting the bracket on!

Not sure what to do next really and the cars now looking sorry for itself a fair bit! Their is resistance and their looks to be thread there but you can twist the bracket/caliper about 4mm ! :headvswal

HELP!

Just had another look and have 2 thoughts if it isnt supposed to be like this (which im sure it isnt!)

1) Can i just put an extra washer in as this looks like it would hold the bracket firmly against the car. Im guessing this would cause one of the brake pads to wear quicker than the other?

2) Anyone see a reason why i couldnt get a nut and bolt to do the same job ? Even if the thread has gone out of my zed (which im still not sure about!) then i could just tighten those 2 togeather and this would hold the bracket firmly?

See if you can get a photo, so we can be certain which bit you're talking about and what it looks like.

The first picture shows the gap that exists at the bottom of the bracket.

2nd picture shows how i think it should be after i gave it a shove. Thing is the bolt (with the allen key end) wont go any tighter and if i tried it would compress the existing washer.

how did the threading seem? you should have 4 bolts with 2 different gauges of threading. The longest ones being the bolts that go to your caliper.

Threading didnt seem too bad to be honest, but im thinking i have stripped some thread as to get the ones in question out now i have to apply pressure on the back side for the first few turns to get them to take. Then they unscrew properly!

How long are they compared to the original ones?

i have the sane bolts grahamS above with the same lables. they are about 5-6 mm longer than the orignal ones.

could i just stick the orignal ones in and see how i get on?

edit: just checked and strangly the orignal nissan ones wont go into the thread on the bracket. Guessing this means somehow the threads are different slightly?

Attached is a picture of the nissan bolt and the new1

I think something is wrong with the bolts. I does appear that the hub to bracket one could be a bit too long. how long are the other bolts?

wait a minute i think ive figured it. the bolt is supposed to go the other way round. from the hub into the bracket. so the head of the bolt is facing you and not the car.

Not sure about this, but are you using the correct bolts ? The new bracket probably isn't threaded, so that bolt should have a shoulder on it.

the bracket is threaded, the hub isnt. He's got the bolt the wrong way round. it is supposed to be opposite from what the original was.

smithy

smithy your a legend mate thanks! I did put that one through the wrong way! idiot me!

I have to agree on both counts there :x: but never mind, hopefully someone else will find this thread and not make the same mistake.

At least you bought from Smithy who has to be one of the best traders ive ever dealt with.

Pete

Just read through this and thought it deserved a bump!!

This is what a CAR FORUM is all about!!  ;)

Have to admit I was a little confused by how to fit the caliper bracket too when I got it.

Could Smithy include some instructions or a diagram with future orders?

Might prevent someone else getting in to trouble next time.
