Anyone know out about corsas? heres the prob.

Hi all.

My g/f's corsa just broke down on her way home from work. She said it started fine , then after about a mile there was a 'rattling noise' and from what shes saying it sounds like it was down on power a bit cas she said the noise stopped after a couple of minutes and the car seemed to pick up. Next thing the noise came back, batterylight came on and there is some smoke and a stong electrical burning smell.

She got towed home by the AA. I've had a quick scout under the bonnet and the smell is still there but cant see anything blindingly obvious.

What do you think then, i'm kinda suspecting that it might be that the starter motor has stuck on, overheated and burnt out.

Whaddya reckon oh forum of knowledge? Its a 1.2 sxi on a 51 plate.

with the batt light coming on it could be the alternator burnt out

dont think its the alternator, i reckon the bat light might have come on due to abnormal electrical situation, ie the starter shorting out.

dont knock it bud, its been a cracking little car. put it this way i'd rather have it over my last daily drive whic hwas a crappy m reg 1.2 clio, or my latest daily which is a 15 pug 106 diesel. he pug does fantastic mpg, if yore doing high miles its ace, however its horrible to drive and really really slow. I drove her corsa the other night and i couldnt believe how fast it was in comparison to my little pug.

What would you know about good cars? you drive a 300!!!!! FFS ;)  :x:

Anyway, back on topic, anyone got any better ideas other than cos its a corsa.

a rattling sound . ok does the car want to start ? ie turn over on the key ??

is it just dead . no power for headlights with engine off and key in ??

if that starter motor had stuck in you would probably hear it grinding ....a nieghbour of mine had a nova GSi maybe same engine i dont know , his did very similar stank of electrical burning , cut out on him couldnt start it etc ....it was the voltage regulator that had shorted out ..cost about 40 quid to replace with GM part

steve

possibly the rattling noise was mistaken as a mechanical rattle it was probably an electrical short to earth popping ...check the negative lead and positive lead of your battery hasnt worn away the insulation and shorted out on the positive side and the terminals and connections to the block and chassis are tight on the negative side , check the cable connections to your starter motor and alternator are tight also

hope it helps fella
