If you keep a vehicle then it will have to be insured, whether or not it's on the road. That's the implication of a news story today in the insurance industry's magazine Insurance Times.

The Motor Insurer's Bureau (MIB) said it had "successfully lobbied the Government to introduce a new law which will require all vehicles to have insurance". This will be in the Road Safety Bill, currently going through Parliament and will create a new offence of "keeping a vehicle without insurance".

The insurance industry -- which of course will stand to profit hugely from this -- reckons that it tightens up the law against those using a vehicle on the road without insurance.

The move came after the MIB started sending details of suspected uninsured cars to police forces up and down the country, which allegedly resulted in a 10x increase in arrests by police.

The MIB argues that the £30 extra it costs all of us to cover those who drive without insurance could be cut if this becomes law. Well, we'll wait and see -- prices tend to go up rather than down -- but if you've a vehicle or two off the road, they'll now need totally superfluous insurance.

At the same time though surely if the vehicle is insured whilst its off road having re build maintenance or stored if its damaged you covered for costs ?

My car is insured all year round regardless, its something ive always done.

If the garage was damaged or the car nicked etc im covered !

SO it does have some benefits.

I think it would depend on the small print ie: exclusions to cover and value it would be covered for if its in bits etc ?

i think the argument on this will run on for ever. :(

True... I would think though if you have declared a car SORN coz you've got it in bits in a barn/garage or whatever you should be allowed to choose whether you insure it or not... athough I'd always try for some sort of insurance.

You'd hope the insurance companies would just charge a decent rate based on the security/car value etc.

Maybe one of the insurance guys on here could give a heads up on plans?

About 4 years ago I had a car off the road and a piece of tree fell on it and bady marked it's roof I was able to claim for the repair off my house and contents insurance and the company were and are still excellent and didn't argue or put the premiums up the following year.

I did think about that. Sounds like you found a good insurance company! who are they if you don't mind me asking?

Clergical and General I think, they insurance in the main Church buildings.

Due to building work the file is in my loft at the moment and I'm having problems opening the hatch it's stuck so I'll confirm the details later.

we have about 9 cars off the road at the moment, they are having a laugh

sounds like a load of *****cks to me, find me a credible source for this. *****cks to them if they think im paying god knows how much for nothing, bloody thing is in pieces for christs sake!

As I thought, it is BS, what the actual press release said back in Sept 05 was

The new proposals will make it an offence to own a car that is uninsured or not registered as off the road If caught, drivers could pay a £60 fine or see their vehicles seized and crushed.

that'll teach me for not doing the research! sorry!

If this is the case, then they will have to amend the laws which apply to SORN, which will have huge implications.

Just read Clarkey's bit - it now makes sense, a lot of police forces are already impounding cars that have no insurance - and for other reasons too.

Only today in my local paper a 21 year old has had his Corsa siezed and I quote "for driving in an inappropriate manner" - this followed a police warning in April - it will now cost him around £100 to get the car back and more the longer he leaves it

I had my old range rover registered as scrapped, as I got fed up with the yearly complications with sorn. They sent me a letter saying that I'd get done big time if the car was found on the road. Oddly, they dont have a legal term for a car that was a registered road vehicle, that now isn't on the road, but is used 100% on private land, so you have to register it as scrapped, which isnt true!

Anything in on my land thats locked is covered; bikes, garden equipment, car parts, etc and because I play guitar I'm covered for that and assorted guitar bits/equipment when its off site as long as its locked in the car or another building.
