am i correct in thinking the 300 has this?

 

So would it be possible to fit a Vtec controller?

nice question yes EARLY 300 TT's have variable timing but only on the inlet side and the system does not work like honda's system. In fact i think the nissan system pre-dates hondas VTEC system? It was quietly dropped in later production years due to cost reduction / emissions issues.

cool mine should have it then being a 1990 import.

 

So the Vtec controller probably wouldn't work then if it's not the same princible.

You car will deffo have it and no the VTEC controller will not change things. I do believe that some chips play with the timing of this but you would have to ask someone more knowledgeable like John Dixon

No, VTC controller won't work.

System is a switch essentially that advances the inlet cam on activation.

It's load / rpm related where it switches and this is ECU controlled. You can mod it in the map.

Nearly all the 300's in the UK will have the variable cam timing as it wasn't dropped until 1996 when they had to comply with the new emmisions regulations and they introduced the OBDII system.
