Quick question on Intercoolers, which has proberbly been asked a thousand times.

Car is basically stock apart from Stillen induction kit & Vailside evolution exhaust, is it worth up grading the intercoolers at this point? Bigger injectors also planned for the near future too.

Should i wait to get the injectors first or will better intercoolers be any benifit now before the injectors, & which intercoolers do you recommend, have read up on intercoolers and it apperes too big an intercooler(s) can have a negative effect, i understand Greedy intercoolers are good? Many thanks

I got lucky and got a pair of stillen intercoolers whilst in the US (the largest side mounted coolers there is for the Z) it was my first step after cooler plugs and an induction kit. The effect was to make the car run like it did on a cool evening or early morning most of the time. Stillen claim 15hp in their literature and you could definitely feel the difference. This forum will debate for ever whether side mounts or front mounted coolers are the best so save that for another day. personally i think its a must do even for modest upgrade paths as the stock items are puny. Check the pics

In short mate almost any decent branded I/C's are gonna be an improvement and as mentioned above, the side mount verses front mount is a long debate.

As side mounts, stillen and HKS whilst bigger actually go up behind the indicator cluster, the Greddys however are thicker rather than taller. ARC are renowned to be the best side mounts on the market as they offer both the biggest cubic capacity and a different inlet/outlet design, these improvements though come at a premium, for the ARC around 1300-1400 and a special order. whereas the other brands are around 700-850 for the complete kit.

Deffo before bigger injectors. :)

Thanks smithy you reminded me.

If you go stillen you have to factor in a set of stillen ducts ($100 extra).

These are needed to guide the airflow up behind the indicator cluster forcing the air to take advantage of the larger size. Without the ducts the air will just flow like stock and you don't get the full advantage. You can see the duct in my third picture and some of the foam sealing that needs placing around the duct. This then seals against your front bumper to create a ram air effect. The hole in the top is to let excess air out once forward motion exceeds a certain speed and the air needs an escape! The Stillen guys told me that until they figured this is out the car used to start making a groaning noise and it took nearly 6 months to find out why!

If i had not got lucky with my stillens for $100 :) i would probably be running greddy by now with some ducting to direct the air more accurately.

Sure felt a bit weird paying as much for the ducts as i did for the coolers but hey it was still a bargain.
