Just started viewing houses today. Saw four properties at lunchtime today, and have come to the conclusion that home improvement TV programmes have an awful lot to answer for. Why?!? #@*&ing laminate flooring is why! It's just crap. You can feel it bending and moving when you walk on it because it's only about half an inch thick, and made out of something that's almost but not quite entirely unlike actual wood. *And* it's never stuck down properly everywhere. The best job I saw today, and admittedly it was otherwise immaculate, had one join held together with gaffer tape. Admittedly in the doorway between the kitchen and lounge, but nevertheless. For crying out loud: either put proper floorboards down or stick with carpet, or, or... well just about anything in fact other than bare concrete. I'm well aware of how cheap it is, but there's a reason for that. I don't know who's responsible for this plague: Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen or somebody I suppose, but they want shooting.

(Sorry btw, don't mean to offend anyone who likes this stuff - it's just I know it's going to annoy me and I'll end up having to pull it all up when I manage to get somewhere, assuming I can't find anywhere not infected with it.)

Anyway, all good fun. Actually got quite excited about buying somewhere... it's funny because I never really saw myself feeling that way about just buying a house. Guess times change. :)

Cheers,

Bart

I hate the stuff too, Made from paper it is. Dreadful stuff you daren't get water on it it lifts, splits, curls etc. We are pulling it out of our house going for real wood floors instead.

Oh and another thing about house hunting that really p*****ed me off was finding carpet in the loo, how disgusting and smelly and dirty Yuk. Especially when there are men in the house who miss the basin. uuuuggggg

I agree about laminate but it's not actually meant to be glued down, it's a floating floor as it expands and shrinks ;)

some types are glued - makes it a real pain to remove!! (glued to each other rather than the floor).

the problem with laminate flooring is it was designed to be layed on a near perfect level floor .. ie.. power floated concrete or cross lapped chipboard or ply flooring .. its like anything .. if the prep work is done fine the finished product will look good.. there are some great laminates available its just a shame about the majority of idiots that fit it

Its better to spend the extra money on better gear and get a real class job done...forget this cheap nasty naff they sell.

The basin is actually quite hard to miss.

It's the toilet that can be a bit of a tricky target.

My wife suggested I sit down to pee as that would solve the problem. So I burned the soles of her feet with a hot crack pipe.

To be honest me and Mrs CD were thinking of getting the kitchen floor done in that laminate wood stuff.

We're about to sell the house and the lino in there's quite scruffy.

Are the more expensive wood floors ok? We're looking at about £600 for a small-medium sized kitchen which didn't sound that cheap to me.

Maybe it'd be just as well to get new lino put down instead?

Get new lino mate it's cheaper, nicer under foot, and can stand up to the extra wear and tear of kitchen useage

I agree, the basin is hard to miss but my missus hates it when I sit on the basin. Especially when I poke it down the plug hole with her toothbrush!!!! :)

Clip-clop clip-clop........sounds like a bloody horse is in the house all the time!!!

Hate the stuff.

Its shite

Only good to laugh at the dog when wet

Oh and Our lass doesn't usually mind me using the basin, does piss her off

when the pots are still in it though

:o

You can tell its friday can't you? Lmao at this thread.

the stuff i installed in our house is not a crappy cheap laminate, throughout the house and the wet rooms, i fitted a ceramic topped and ceramic bottomed laminate, the center board is impregnated with a resin based board that doesn't soak up the water, 15 year guarantee and you can scratch it with a nail and not mark it, fookin lovely stuff. just ain't cheap..!!

my best buy was out staircase i fitted in, imported it from arke in italy, the stairs including the shipping and customs fee only came to 1240, it took me two hours to fit it.

Yeah I'd agree, what with being a potential buyer and all that. I saw a couple of otherwise really nice places yesterday, which I'm going to see again Sunday afternoon and I'd vastly rather they just left the carpets in place. Also, if you daren't get the stuff wet it might not be so good in a kitchen.

The stairs are another bone of contention in one of them: they're really nice wood and the husband wants them left bare, sanded, and oiled, whereas the wife doesn't want the mess and wants them carpeted. I'm with the husband TBH and if I put in an offer I'll be asking them to do absolutely nothing to them in preference to laying carpet.
