Is my gearbox/clutch on its way out ? :-(

Ok, I changed the gearbox oil with silkolene Silktran Syn 5 to try and cure it but it has'nt, I have several problems with it.

1) at idle the gear box makes a noise in neutral, is this the release bearing or something worse

2) when depressing the clutch I get a rusty metal on metal type noise but its not the slave cylinder as I have lubed it

3) when changing from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and back down I get a strange sound I can only describe as a honk but it's not goose honk and the gears are difficult to select especialy when trying to change quickly. Would this be the clutch just needs adjusting.

Any comments please people and I hope it's not bad news

you dropped the oil yet paul and filled it fresh? try that first, before you go down the road of taking it apart. i will be rebuilding mine over the winter as two shims need replacing in the box. if you can try some redline mt90 its worked wonders on mine, however i havent had the clucking that other people have had on my box or grinding of gears.

the noise in neutral could well be the release bearing and the metal noize may well be crap round the clutch, easiest way to tell is to take it apart, no other way really.

2) I get that sound sometimes, I think its just the pedal. I had this noise on my previous car too (Almera) and had clutch cable changed but noise was still there.

3) Sounds like a syncromesh problem. I sometimes get a crunch sound in second (not always), but if I change slowly or double d clutch its OK.

Personally I would leave it until its vertually un-usuable, then get it fixed. HTH

Sounds to me like a dry clutch release bearing. I've no experience of them on a Z but on other cars where you had access to it via the engine compartment, a drop of oil on the bearing used to get rid of the noise.

Good luck
