I think I may have it...

Is it as loud as when you have noisy lifters on start up, or go you have to strain your ears to hear it when driving?

Also, does it only occur when there is load on the engine? I've searched for these but didnt come up with anything.

Thanks everyone! :D

Usually comes under load and gets louder the more load put on the engine, can get as loud as noisey lifters on start up.

Would you know if I had it if you heard it?? Oh yeah, I will ask around at work about your welding job.

Yeah, I have heard it a few times so pretty confident if I heard yours I would be able to tell you for definate. Is this continuing on from your marble swirling round in a tin can sound or something completely different?

If you can hear detonation in your car then it is bad, and it needs attention urgently, it can vary in noise, sometimes can sound like pinking and sometimes can sound someone scrunching up a crisp packet.

Yeah it is.

The way I understood it, as explained on previous threads, is that it is a rather distinct rattle. However mine is rather subtle. More 'tiny stones swirled in a can' as appossed to shaken. If you get what I'm trying to say!

I'm pretty sure its a rotating object making the noise. Similar to when the blades on the helicopter turbine engine rub on the casing.

I only get it when I'm driving in gear. tried it in N whilst moving and it didnt happen. Thing is I cant rule out the turbo as its not producing boost!

Not producing boost? do you know why its not? sounds more like a turbo problem to me and thats causing the sound as well, as Mark just said though, if it is detting badly then try not to drive it as it will melt down and you will end up with no engine.

are you saying it is not producing boost full stop or not boosting in neutral which it won't do anyway.

  • Author

Sorry guys, didnt explain myself properly! Boost is fine, well according to the stock gauge. Pulling strongly too. I realise it wont boost up in neutral, LOL! I'm gonna check for a Code 34 shortly, to rule out the sensor. I'll come back with answer, thanks guys! ;)

Why are you doing a det sensor check, if the car has a faulty det sensor it is unlikely to be detting, due to it being in safety boost?

  • Author

But if the sensor wasnt working, and it is detting then the ECU wont know to put it into safety boost. Is that right?

And if the sensor IS working, and it IS detting, then it should be in safety boost. Which its not. Is that right too?!

I'm still learning on this bit!

a fault in the det sensor circuit will put you in safety boost

Ahhh, thanks! Thats what I needed to know!

Thanks for everyones input too!

Might be worth checking to make sure the Det sensor has not been bypassed, then you could have detonation and no safety boost.

like the man says ^^^

Yeah, didnt quite understand it to start with!

Cheers :D
