right, heres a question where can i get my zed remapped? got used to it now and its running hardly any boost at all, i mean like 10psi! which for the spec is peanuts, would really like to turn up the boost and make some more power so where would be good either near colchester or kent and what sort of work/prices would be involved? ideas please!

Dunno about Colchester/Kent but I know John Dixon will do you a nice custom mapping. He is in Kidderminster...

HTH

has it been chipped already?

what way you looking to increase boost? EBC or boost jets?

where can you get boost jets from?

I know a guy in essex who can chip your ecu if you have increased boost or free flowing air filter etc...

let me know if you have these otherwise it's pointless re-mapping your ecu.

Judging by the list of mods in his signature it would have to be already mapped, in which case for more/fine tuning John dixon is the man :)

Makes me laugh when people spend thousands on modding a car then get tight when it comes to the most important bit of your car ie the electronics which control eveything!!!

Buying an "off the shelf" chip if not too bad if your running basic mods but anymore and the "off the shelf" chips are just basic maps and being as no 2 cars are the same you really need a decent engine management and someone who can map it properly on a dyno who has the experience!!

Trust me it may cost more but your car will last longer and you WILL get more power out of your set up i promise you!!!

Dont have to cost the earth you can get the emanage fully fitted and mapped for around £500 and go all the way upto the likes of me and MAC with fully standalone units which your looking more like £2k mapped??

Mike

As said ^^^^ i would be looking at adding at least a blue emanage or the Ultimate and getting the car mapped up to make the most of the mods. You could go cheapo and add an Apexi SAFCII with some dyno time and still get more than any off the shelve mapped ECU could do.

According to your rides section, you already have a MINES ecu.

Stand alone over piggyback any day of the week. Go standalone, get a wideband and blow the car up... errr i mean map the car yourself, like i'm doing.

Andy was the Mines ECU not just a modified Jap Stock map for use with Stock turbos and fueling??

in order to push them turbos to there operating range the only thing that would need setting up would be fueling and boost. So some RR time and a fuel computer would be best option. Or buy a PLX dual wideband controller and do it yourself - if you know what your doing lol

And also ignition timing.

The SAFC is not a wise way of tuning the zed, it alters the fueling by adjusting the signal from the afm, deceiving the ecu, which uses the afm signal to adjust the ignition timing accordingly.

All piggybacks including emanage blue etc etc also modify the AFM signal though Mark. Good results with the SAFC etc etc Depend on who your tuner is, Any good tuner can retard the ignition at any point on a map by introducing knock. Though as ive said, i would be looking at the Emanage ultimate and going map based doing away with the AFM.

You say he can retard the igntion using knock, but this is not ideal, and they may want to advance the ignition?

Personally I would go for a custom map every day of the week and since we have that ability on the board at a reasonable price, it would be wise to use it.

No doubt at all, im just giving alternatives - not everyone is Geograhically lucky when it comes to that though mark :-)

I'm not a fan of the bodging devices, you either get your ECU mapped appropriately, or if it's outside the range of what that can cope with then go standalone.

My friend has got a MoTeC ECU with a custom map in his Evo 6. It cost him £2.5k. He is running 1.6 bar boost and anti-lag. The flames and bangs that come out of his exhaust are awesome!

Mine cost £750 for two map sessions but at the end of the day its SPOT ON!

How has he done anti lag?

Motec m800 has dual stage Anitlag as standard :-)

Is Motec the engine management?

How does the anti lag work?

Im not sure the technical but I could find out. I know he has a switch so he can turn it on and off :)

I've been in it loads of times and its insanely quick. Quickest thing ive ever been in, it rips your guts out. lol.

He did a 1/4 mile at Santa Pod in 12.7 which is pretty impressive

Yes its Engine management

Anti lags works by the turbos always running, hence all the pops and bangs. Doubt it does your turbo(s) much good if running for longs periods of time tho. He only runs it on special occasions and is awesome.

It blew all the sponge stuff from inside his back box. lol. I was following him and all these bits of sponge was hitting my windscreen. lol

He then had to get it all out with some pliars and is now MEGA loud!

ALS on rally cars works thus :-

Firstly, boost is controlled very acurately by using 2 fuel injectors as air valves, these feed the boost/atmospheric pressure to the waiste gate actuator, allowing minute and very fast acting boost control.

Secondly, the normal method of controlling engine idle via an idle control valve, that bypasses the throtle butterfly is dispensed with, the static idle is set in the old fashioned way by a locked off bypass screw.

Thirdly, where the idle control valve used to be, a new valve is fitted that has a solenoid controlled valve (looks like an engine inlet valve internally) that can open/close the throttle buterfly bypass orifice very qickly.

Forthly, a miram turbo shaft is used to withstand the massive increase in turbo temperature generated by ALS.

Fifth, there is no dump valve used on an ALS equipped engine, the whole point of ALS is to keep boosting the engine, even on closed throttle.

The way it works is that when you come off the throttle, for example braking hard into a corner, the throttle butterfly closes as per normal, once the boost drops to a certain level, the ECU starts to pulse the Throttle butterfly bypass valve, this has the same effect as you constantly stabbing the throttle on and off very quickly, this means that the engine is being driven by the ECU as though it wants to accelerate again, however this occilation of the throttle bypass valve is happening so fast, it has the effect of allowing the turbo to stay spinning yet produces no additional torque to drive the car forward.

The effect of all this is that massive heat is generated in the turbo exhaust side, which ignites all the excess fuel, there is no deliberate overfuelling going on to explode the turbo impellar area.

Motec runs the same way but uses the idle control valve instead of the butterfly to achieve the effect.

Antilag if fine if your running a rally car but it destroys turbos after about 3000-5000 miles!!! but as they change the turbos every rally its not a problem but no good for road use, suppose now and again it wouldnt be too bad ;)

My ECU has it but i wont be setting it up, my mapper mainly does rally cars and he was telling me about some of the cars and they have the antilag set so that even on idle the turbo is making 0.5 bar of boost

yup Kirbz, Turbos and manifolds take an absolute Kicking with it :-( luckily most AM systems like motec allow you to hardwire switch the activation, so you can use it for showing off once in a blue moon lol

Any good tuner can retard the ignition at any point on a map by introducing knock.

Not on the Z. Single det retard parameter applied globally over the maps (&H7FB8) Once limits in knock tables exceeded then switches to different maps.

Also, Z load scale based on theoretical puleswidth where TP = F(air flow / rpm) so timing always messed up by tinkering with AFM signal.
