currently i have Dump valves on the turbo pipes at the top of the engine.

If i was to remove these and connect the standered wastegates back up would it make the cool wastegate sound rather than the dump valve noise?

Also what are the best?

My brother done this on his 200sx and his wastgates sound awesome and they are standered.

recirc valves. these are the ones you remove/block off when you fit atmospheric dump valves. not sure about a 200 but on a Z you dont want them to sound of anything! they go HONK when theyre not working properly.

oh right i get ya, my brothers 200sx has wastegates so assumed they were the same. silly me.

Thanks.

That waste gate noise is more than likley high pressure air going past the compresser blades in the turbo housing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you do a bit of jiggery-pokery with the pipes recirculating the high pressure air back to the tubs (i.e. remove from the recirc valve, and plug up the pipe you removed) then that'll work the same as a dump and give you the same sound.

Just make sure you do it to the right pipe...

alot of the high powered cars i.e. skylines , evos , scoobies , gtos ect also remove the recirc valves and blank off any vacumn hoses . There is various debates on this but the bottom line was due to the boost pressure a zed runs it wont make any difference on the life of the turbo. But its completely up to you wether want to do it or not. but in effect with no recirc or DV u are making the turbo slow down a bit between gear changes ( compressor stall ) . and the noise is caused by the air going through the turbos blades and getting chopped up.

I had a pulsar gtir a few years back, the car was tuned to arround 300 bhp with the usual mods and a chip. When i picked the car up on the monday i noticed it was chattering and thought mmm sounds the buisness ,when i finally got to having a good look at the dv i realised the vacume pipe wasnt connected, after connecting the pipe i got the usual dv sound and the chattering. The car was boosting to 1 bar but to this day i have no idea what caused the chattering even at very low revs just as boost was coming in it would make the sound,i would love to no what caused it so jaffa im as interested as to finding this out as you are:).

as i said mate the noise is caused by the air going through the turbos blades and getting chopped up , u van get this by blocking off recircs and plugging vacumn lines.

in that case m8 wouldnt cars that dont have recircs such as rs turbos and the like make this sound! Also i thought this may have had something to with the wastegate!maybe i need to learn some more about turbos :)

wastegate chatter is nothing to do with a wastegate. it is has been said, the compressor stalling. its the compressed air bouncing off the blades after its bounced off a closed butterfly.

a turbo doesnt need to match engine speed. the wastegate will open on overrun (when u lift off at higher revs) but that it is because closing the throttle butterfly causes a massive pressure spike in the inlet manifold. the wastegate opens at say 1bar, and it will spike beyond that.

a wastegate makes no noise, apart from maybe altering the exhaust tone!

also, a wastegate works on the exhaust side of the turbo, it doesnt open to get rid of unwanted boost. thats what you fit a DV for.

heres a good link for details :
