I will take ths as a warning not to decat mine?

In my opinion, mate, it's not worth the ris- unless you're prepared to replace the tubs if necessary. As soon as I decatted mine, I got the dreaded blue smoke - no real problem as long as you keep a regular eye on your oil level, but you gotta say it's a little embarrasing having plumes of oily smoke coming out yer nice-looking car! A much better bet for some more performance, I think, would be to get a boost controller and up the psi's!!

for 14bhp i wouldnt bother.some people have been lucky but there are loads that havent.leaving mine on as my tubs puff with the first boost then remain clear after.ive also been told by a zed garage who is well established that he would advise to leave them on the car as he has fitted them at the owners request and after a couple of months they come back and complain the cars smoking.

The reality is that very few have had problems, and those that have its just that the Cats were hiding a problem with the seals that were already there.

Its not the minor power increase thats the real advantage, its the throttle reponse, quicker spool and less lag thats most noticable.

last 2 zeds we have fitted decats, have smoked within 10mins of fitting and running,so unless you have £1500-2000 spare i wouldnt bother

De-cat done about a month ago when I replace the whole exhaust and I've had no problems, but then I did opt for a couple of small silencers where the cats used to be, so maybe I still have a bit of back pressure there.

Noticed a big change in the throttle response after the change that I put mostly down to the Jap restrictors being removed with the old exhaust.

mine was already decatted when i got it from japan ive had no probs in my 3years of ownership.

So true, mine smoked after a couple of weeks of decatting, evenually getting my tubs done now this month

Mine were decatted years ago and are still OK (not perfect, but ok)

When I used to sell turbos I asked customers why they were buying ?

approx 65% were blowing excess smoke and had previously de-catted in past 6 months ( some only days!)

approx 20% were simply looking to upgrade for more power and or had the engine out anyways and the last 15% had purchased turbos in past 18 months from another company because of excess smoking to find that someway down the line it happened again.

Now from this I (IMO) conclude that seeing as the Zed engine is meant to have a certain amount of back pressure in the system, de-catting is the biggest modification that alters this, so you run a higher risk of excess smoking.

Now add to this the various different exhaust designs/manufactures on the market today, again these play a part in back pressure and go towards explaining why some do and some dont, of course other factors like engine breathing etc also come into it, but IMO without a doubt, for as many peeps who say theirs has been okay, theres just as many who havn't !

So personally for anyone whos thinking about de-catting for power, do so if you know you can spare a couple grand within the next 6 months or so, just to be on the safe side :) OR as tehre are now sports high flowing universal cats on the market today, buy a set of new S/S decatts and have these new hight flow sports catts fitted, gotta be a cheaper option than fitting standard again or decatting and POSSIBLY needing new tubs.

Finally, when we talk of the turbo seal, it is actually a piston ring seal that wears, never in 4 years did a set of mine come back ( to me) with this seal gone again as Turbo dynamics are the only company I know that fit as standard on 300zx' turbo's, stagger gap race spec rear piston ring seals, hence the last 15% of my sales

cheers

Mine was decatted when it got off the boat from Japan two years ago, I've only had it for a few weeks but as far as I know ther's never been a problem and it doesn't smoke at all.........although by saying that i've probably just jinxed it and now they'll go on the way home from work

My tubs have gone ... literaly!! havnt got any  seriously though my first TT smoked within a week of decatting and 90% of the people ive spoken to about it have had a similar experience .. not just zed owners either.. maybe its a weaker rear seal being used on production car tubs .. as at the end of the day they were designed for a catted system .. be nice to see the difference between the seals on a tub designed for production cars and a tub designed for aftermarket use

maybe im wrong ?
