Did anyone see that piece on TV last night were a TV crew were out on the streets in Scotland to ask if any Jocks will support England in the world cup.

Needless to say the answer was an emphatic "Nay". This is no longer a suprize to me, but what was, was the fact that The Scotts ask, seemed to believe we would not support Scotland if England had fail to qualify and Scotland had. Yet without exception every single English person I have spoken to about this agree that they would support any of the home nations if they went to the finals and we didn't.

Also that scrawny Scotts tennis play said he'd support anyteam England were playing because he's Scotts. So the reporter said OH! so you don't want the Engish to support you at Wimbledon then? He didn't know what to say.

Why is it that the English believe us all to be British and see the rivalry in the same way as that between friends. Yet the Scotts and the North Welsh seem to hate us and each other?

I'm not trying to start a war. I'm genuinley curious, but please don't quote history of 1200 to 1400 and blob, Because britain for the most part since James the first of Engand (he was James the ? of Scotland) has been run by Scott Monarks or Ploiticians. Lets Face it we got a Scott in Number 10 & 11

I have trained a lot of people from Scotland, Wales and Ireland, one thing I always noticed is they are emphatic about where they come from, talk to a Scots man and Scotland is wonderful, best place in the world. Now when I have trained English people they all hate the place want to get out etc etc, thats why English will support any part of the UK, they just dont care so much.

It was James the VI of Scotland btw.

I am proud to be a Scot and would never, ever, under any circumstances support the English football team but tbh that is probably because I detest football (and professional footballers) but I do follow the English cricket team.

I'm a Yorky and nobody is prouder of their roots than Yorkies. + were ever you go in the world you will always find Paddies, Jocks, Taffs and Yorkies. Even halfway up Kilermanjaro. or Nagasaky Oh yes and Gordies. Why is that?

Where as southerns all seem to go to spain to work, live, holiday or what ever. Yet I still support any of my fellow Brits at what ever they do in sports.

Probably because whenever England do well in a sport they are "English", yet when they do piss poor they are "British"...

And by the way, what is "Scotts", is that a name???

I think thats something that all poor comedians say when they get on tv.

I know that Tim Henman is always referred to as british and so is Andy Murray (although some call him a scott which is the opposite of the above comment) , so was Damon Hill and Dave Coulthard. So was Linford Christie and Colin Jackson.

In my experience with commentators and sports broadcasters they are more likely to call an english athlete british and scottish/welsh/Nirish either british or their home country.

Hence the Eurovision song contest. Lets face it no one likes the English anymore.

TOMMY: Doesn't it make you proud to be Scottish?

RENTON: I hate being Scottish. We're the lowest of the f*cking low, the scum of the earth, the most wretched, servile, miserable, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some people hate the English, but I don't. They're just w*nkers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by w*nkers. We can't even pick a decent culture to be colonized by. We are ruled by effete arseholes. It's a shite state of affairs and all the fresh air in the world will not make any f*cking difference.

They're angry and bitter cos the English gave them a shoeing and took their country. :nelson:

No they didn't Britain came into being because the Scotish King was invited by both parliments to become the king of England Wales and Ireland by parlimentry act. Hense forth The united kingdoms were known as Great Britain.

Now war or concering going on at all. That is a pervesion of the facts by nationalists trying to cause division.

Yeah remember Braveheart! That australian guy beat the english and the new king of england was a french auzzie baby. Which is why the true rivalry is England Vs France.

We are on one Island so we are all English in my eyes LOL dont wanna upset anyone but I just never really think about us as different countries.

Why are Scottish people often anti-English then (as suggested in the initial post) ?

And was Renton / Ewan McGregor talking out of his arse in Trainspotting?

And why is Parliament in London?

I'm not suggesting I'm correct and you're not, I just genuinely wonder.

And it's ignorance on my part not an attempt to cause division. Far less sinister.

He's just a charictor playing the roll of what certain Scotts think. As to why Parliment is in London I don't know. Maybe because His new Palaces in England were comfier and the weather better. I really don't know.

I honestly think if Parliment had been in York or Lancaster the country would be less easily divided.

I must say that every Scot I have ever met has been really and truly proud of their roots and their history .. It is a shame the English aren't as proud of theirs because we should be.

I support scotland and wales all the way.

You always have to support the underdogs.

Amen to that

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! You've just answered markzx's question. We may all be British but we are certainly not all English, it's this constant use of English/British as being the same, that bugs all us non-English inhabitants of the U.K.

Hey mate I call us all Brits and us Northerers do feel very different to the Southerners, but when push comes to shove we'll be there for ya.

Maybe a proper British Footy team and league may be the answer. Cos I know that Even the Irish Rugby supporters will support England if they get knocked out and The Welsh And Scotch Rugby Fans. Just as we cheered Wales against the All Blacks

Maybe Football is too trible

I used to support the provinces of the UK, but not any more. My workplace is populated with scots and I'm fed up hearing about how much they dinnae wanna England to win anything. Most are supporting Trinidad and Tobago this time 'cos there are a few Scots from the 3rd division in the team.

I did ask one of them one day why they would rather support ANYONE other than England, and he had to admit is was purely down to jealousy and a lack of success at pretty much all the major sports (curling and caber tossing apart).

I asked my mate who's Scottish (and very clever... and a bit of a leftie).

He said....

**** me, there's a lot in there.

The act of union (1707?)was a stitch up by the Scottish aristocracy.

Sure, James 1st/6th was a Scottish king, but that doesn't mean much. It's

all tied up with religion too - Culloden was as much a battle in a

civil/religious war as Scots v English.

For me the big thing is the 1980s. England voted Thatch in constantly

because they were all doing pretty well under her (the South anyway).

Meanwhile, decisions she took were shutting down all the industry in

Scotland. We voted for Marxist Labourites, we got Milton Friedman economics

throwing us all on the dole and turning our working people into benefit

and heroin junkies. There was 60,000 people in Greenock in the 1980s,

and 25,000 men worked in the shipyards and marine engine works.

Nationalised industries. Thatcher took the ideological decision to stop

supporting them, and they -all- closed down. An island nation not building

ships! She made sure the dockyards in the south got loads of navy work

though.

Look at any ferry you like now and it's built in Italy. You think the

Italians are better than us at building ships? We just gave in so she

could spend the money on tax cuts, Trident and sucking up to the Yanks.

It was the same with coal mines and steel works and aluminium smelters.

They all closed down because England voted the Tories and their

free-market policies in while Scotland was voting Labour as hard as it could.

We called it the democratic deficit. The Tories didn't have one MP up

there, but did what they wanted. And no-one in England gave a toss.

There's much, much more on this. Best served with a load of beer.

That's why I've got a Paraguay shirt in the post for the first match...

Wont be supporting any team in the World Cup, coz I am one of the few guys who hate football ! :nelson:

The wife on the other hand is a big football fan. Had her season ticket for Glasgow Rangers for years, and will be watching every game she can.

Who will she be supporting ?? England !!

Scottish throo and throo I am, but worked in England for a few years.

East Midlands Airport with digs in Loughborough,

Stansted Airport with digs in Harlow at 1st, then Great Dunmow.

Always found that when I started somewhere new, most English guys treated me with a certain amount of caution. Presumably being over 6ft, and 16st, bald with a goatie beard, I looked kinda, well, maybe, grumpy ? ;)

After a few days when they sus you out and realise that you are just "normal"

I was always treated the same as everyone else.

Made some cracking mates while working down there, and still keep in touch and visit them, as well as them bringing their families up here.

I personally dont have any probs with English people, in fact my Father stayed in Hookwood, Horley for 20 years until he died last year.

Plenty of idiots up here that despise the English tho ! :smw:

My signature says it all really !! :D

So on that note, see yoo later Jimmy !!!

Alan.....

Well, im Scottish and pretty damn proud of it. Hence the avatar lol.

Anyhoos, i dont support England purely due to their arrogance. I dont mean the english people, just the commentators/players etc etc.

I absolutely love the world cup. Everything comes second when its on, but it gets bloody annoying having to listen to England this, England that. I mean if it was Ivory Coast this, Ivory coast that i'd probably get pissed off at them too lol. Having to listen to the 'possible' england line up during a Argentina v Croatia game for example, or Englands route to the final before the tournament even bloody starts. zzzzzzzzzzzz

As for Trinidad, they are getting quite a lot of support up here. Partly because there are a lot of Scottish based players in their squad, partly because they are total underdogs, partly because Jason SCOTLAND plays up front, and well... partly because they are in Englands group.

The wife on the other hand is a big football fan. Had her season ticket for Glasgow Rangers for years, and will be watching every game she can.

Sounds like you've got yourself a good woman there!! :D
