Wow, only been in civvy street for less than 6mths. Really fell on my feet getting a great network engineers job, been working really hard to gain experience of civvy street and got a top quality report and chuck up for the first 6mths. Now the company is making several thousand people redundant!! They've offered voluntary redundance deals which people can go for , and either get realeased or refused, and once that phase is over they'll do compulsory redundancy to get rid of who they want. We're hoping that our side of things wont get effected so much as we're super busy. Can't help worrying that I could end up on a later list. I guess they'll probably get rid of a lot of managers first, followed by the 'dead wood'. Then they'll probably look at people like me who havn't been here long.

I was tempted to go for it just to see if they would let me go , at least I'd know where I was for sure then. Either job hunting with a small wad of cash or definately staying. I don't want to push the decision though by applying for it. I'm half way through my cisco CCNP qualifications and didn't really want to leave while doing them. I've decided to just stick it out and see what happens as the cash isn't really worth much compared to the experience I'll gain even in just a few months.

Hopefully won't get effected, and I guess I shouldn't have any major problems finding another job, but this is a good one though. Bit of a shock really as Royal Marines don't get made redundant!!

id try and get the CCNP done first mate then you can get something a bit better with more cash.

on the upside cyber terrorists don't shoot bullets at you!

Yep do the CCNP. Network security is a good field. Get your hands mucky in Linux with TCPDUMP :)

Yeah, the CCNP is my main focus at the moment. I'm in a reasonable position if the worse did happen as I've got my CCNA and my MCSA (not that I want to go back to servers), and at least will have probably half of the CCNP in the next few months and probably the other half a few months later. Plus the current job has given me some very good commercial experience building networks. Just didn't expect to be having to think about it all again so soon. Still with any luck I wont get effected by it all, touch wood as the zed will need more tyres soon!

Funny you should mention linux as I was going to re-install it on my home network as I could do with having a more network orientated setup than windows.

Good Luck Royal,

I left the Mob in 2001 and had 5 jobs since leaving, there is life outside the gates. Keep on going with the CCNP.
