I suspect I don't have the code as got them 2nd hand with the wheels.

You could say that the last place to work on ya car lost it get them to sort it out.

i used to be a tyre fitter and we alway's got the blame no mater how long it had been. And if we did find a key we would put it to one side and call them.

Nobody but me works on my car, so no one to blame but me !

You may just have to get them off and replace them then, cant see any other way. I have 2 different McGard keys you are welcome to try but I doubt very much they will work.

i doubt there will be a master key.

i've lost the key for my wheels. waiting for a mate to get hold of a special socket that will remove them.

Thanks for the offers guys. I will have a mooch around Halfords to see what they have there. I know there are special sockets available, will have to keep an eye out for one of those too. I may give McGard a call as well. Cheers.

andy the locking nut removal tools will not work on the msguard nuts, Trust me i have tried it a few times , these mcguard ones are seriusly tuff not like the older crappy ones and it takes ages to even make a mark on them !! take the car to a garage and get them drilled off , It will take a while but is the easiest solution . I junt bunged the guys £20 and they were happy to do it for me . Took em an hour though ha ha ha

Cost me about £15 to get an old set of locking nuts hacked off at a garage.the key i was given with the car wasnt the right one much to my embarrasment when i arrived for a new set of tyres

Most locking wheel nuts you can get off by hammering a socket over the end, Mcgard ones are the *****cks tho.

I'd fire your mechanic!

Yeah, I was seriously considering it ! After all the good work putting the engine back together, the pillock left the locking key on the nut when taking it for a test drive ... Yesterday morning, I realised what had happened and I was off cycling round my private test track route in the hope of finding it - at 06:30 am !!!!

I was thinking of those funny "one size fits all socket" with loads of little pins in the middle.

the socket they use to remove the nuts without a key has threaded teeth inside it with a left hand thread, so as you tighten the socket the threads bite into the wheel nut and eventually undo the nut.

Yes, I think I can get some of those. However, my current plan involves taking a closeup pic of the keyway and buying a new set from Halfords with an identical key. Then with the certificate etc I'll send off to McGard for a new key and will have a complete spare set to sell here or Fleabay.

Trust me guys and andy , those wont work on the mcguard ones , and ive tried it twice now !!

Andy,

Ring Mcgard directly and speak to Senta. I have had numerous dealings with her and she can help out quickly. There are various ways of getting the replacement key. First and easiest is to take a picture of the lock nut using a digital camera. Make sure you zoom in and take a clear snapshot, then email her the attachment. It would be even better if you could use photoshop to invert the pic into a negative and then send it off for better clarity on the pattern. She will send you a new key free of charge (just mention myself). Also another painful way is to use plaster and take a mould of the lock and then send it to her.

Oh, by the way, Mcgard have 235 different lock variations hence I don't think Halfords will be of help.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much, I will do that. I took a photo earlier this evening and was planning on trying a comparison in Halfords. I thought there may be 20 variations, not 235 !

I done exactly the same, but luckily about a week later my dad was visiting and said that he found and strange bolt by my gate.

Before I lose it again, if I take the key to say Halfords can they match it? The car didn’t come with any paperwork or codes for the locking wheel nuts. I don’t know the make, but its not a mcgard one, in fact I’ve occasionally got a 19mm socket stuck on it, so a 18mm might work as someone suggested, but I’d rather get a spare to be sure.

Thanks

David
