to advance or not to advance?

Just been reading Andyp's excellent tech site and came across an article on advancing the timing - the guy who was doing it recorded some impressive gains.

Wondered what the view was on the forum - obviously there are danagers with associated detonation, but if you stay on the right side of this is there other problems that may be encountered.

If you do it in harsh conditions on a Dyno it is pretty safe to tweek the timing for Maximum power gains - Of course there is always a risk but as long as you stick within the base line of what others have found to be safe you should have no problems

Of course a lot of Z's timings are not set 100% correct in any case - Settin them to the Correct factory standard migth yeild gains for some !

Nico - thanks for the reply. Are there any drawbacks for day to day driving? How does the process of altering the timing affect the output as you are not increasing any of the key components other than when it sparks. - am i missing something.

Messing with the timing is a bit of a sledgehammer approach really. The correct way to do this is to change the ignition maps in the ECU, but obviously that takes time and skill and equipment and a dyno etc etc. If you alter the timing then you are just changing the offset throughout the rev range. i.e the ECU thinks it's running with 22 deg at 3000rpm and it's actually got 24 deg. As Nico said you're best off checking it's set to what Mr Nissan originally intended before you change anything, and if it isn't, and your car has been messed with and it runs OK, then there is a chance that it's set there for a reason already. I would be very hesitant to make any changes without a dyno.

I vaguely remmeber JWT making a recomendation for the timing with their chip, but unfortunately I can't remember where I saw it , or what it was right now.
