Stripped the engine down in my Zed

Well, the engine was taken out of my Zed last week and was stripped today to rebuild.

After stripping, have found the engine is way past repair. Supprised how it still ran as smoothly as it did as it's pretty much suffered catastraphic failure.

3 pistons had chunks missing out of them, the oil in the base of the sump was so full of swarf it gave it an almost metallic finish, also two valves had burnt out due to the chronic breathing issues. Bores are scored as well of course.

Amazing really, those that know me know that I drive the thing like an old man, hardly ever drive it on boost and I rarely drive it full stop plus it had only done 50k.....and it ends up basically like chocolate.

Luckily the spare buggered engine that gixxar sold me is actually rebuildable. So work starts on that one soon.

Me too! Well, should have it back in a few weeks fingers crossed, supposed to be taking it to France at the end of next month. That's still within scope. But feels miles away.

Its probably due to the conservative way you drive,

that the engine lasted as long as it has done ! ;)

If you had been thrashing it around, it would have given up a long time ago.

Full credit to you bud.

Hope it all comes together soon, with as little hassle as possible.

Chin up fella. :D

Cheers Alan. I have lost heart with the thing totally. Maybe I'll regain interest in it when I get it back.

You will ! ;)

When that guy ran into the back of mine and wrote it off,

I felt the same way.

Wait until the night before you are due to pick it up ! :hyper:

It will feel like Xmas when you were a nipper.

Mmmmm, hope it is that good. I do want the thing back. I think it only ran properly for the first month of ownership.

Still not really very convinced by the Zed.

Si. have a drive of mine, that will convince you, I have owned it a 12 month now and go to Derby regularly in it. I treat it like a modern performance car, and push it hard. It just flies, the only things that stops working is me, I get scared. Its a real monster. It did well at Japfest which meant quite high revs because the circuit is quite tight. Apart from a bad connection on the CAS unit, which was a show stopper, its brilliant, and 25mpg as well. Its real smile mixture.

Wow...engine certainly was in a sorry state then. :( Unfortunatly it only takes one previous owner to abuse the maintainence (low oil, low water or detting from excessive boost/underfueling..etc) on any engine and the results are passed onto the unsuspecting new owner.

Glad its on the mend, and she'll be back on the road soon.

Well, one of the turbos didn't have its actuator plugged in so one side was running unlimited boost. Must have buggered the pistons and rings and then just got worse.

I'm sure once it's all done, you'll love it and won't be able to wait to drive it again.

Best of luck to you Si, now get it done before JAE :D

That engine must have been buggered when you bought the car from the dealer. You would think that any dealer that values its reputation would carryout a compression test on every vehicle before selling it, as part of a general inspection, and thus validating the quality of what is the heart of any car like this. I suppose that would put them in line for the expense of fixing it, which is not their scene. The least they could have done is given you one of them mechanical warranties, so that you could claim some of the money back for the repair. Like most garages, they probably don't give a f**k once they have got your money.
