Is it possible to do the following?.................

I want to upgrade my PC, but so as not to spend loads of time re-installing everything, could I just install a second hard drive into my PC as it stands now, copy ALL my program files over to the new drive, then when I re-build the PC, install the OC* to the old drive, re-install this new drive and copy all the program files back to the old drive? Will that work? And will the programs work? If not is there a way of doing so, without spending hours re-loading all the programs that I use?

*= I'll have to re-load the OC, as I'll be replacing the processor and motherboard (Upgrading to a 3G P4, from a 2.6 Celeron, should make a bit of difference ;) )

you can just put all the important files on dvd or cd then install the os on the new drive. which i would recommend as you will get rid of the accumulated crap that your system acquires.

or, use a program like Norton ghost, i think there are a few other program to back up your system with as well. any probs give us a pm bud

Leight

you'd have to re-install the programs as well mate.

most programs copy files/settings into the windows directory so its not that easy to just copy them over i'm afraid.

Well that way is no saving on time at all, as I already have almost everything on disc anyway, so that'll take about 5 or 6 hours with re-boots etc.

Just been doing some checking, and what about a program like >>THIS? It says that it'll copy the entire hard drive in one go, which considering I'll be installing everything, including the OS (Why did I put OC on the first post :headvswal ) anyway, seems the best option.

Get a copy of Norton Ghost or Partition Magic.

It will do exactly what you're wanting.

Copies the entire drive to your new one then you can remove the old one and format it or whatever.

You have to reinstall all the programs. And an enthusiast gamer PC should have XP reinstalled every 12 months. With Windows you get this silt of settings that build up which makes it slow. Only thing to be done is to wipe the c: and reinstall windows from scratch. Hence why i have a 10GB c: for windows and essential apps and a d: for programs.

Similar to what I want to do, as I already have an 80Gb hard drive, that I'll still use for my OS and Prog files etc, and a new 300Gb which I'll use for everything else :D

Thanks for all the advice guys, vijay I'll talk to you later mate :D
