Swift GTi's are great, rare though.

Clio 16v's was a great car, used to have one about 8 years ago. Overshadowed by the Williams, which left it comparably unknown (and its name did'nt help). Fast (136bhp) and handled well.

Had an AX GT too for a short time, you dont really want one. Fun, but flimsey as hell would'nt want to have a smash in it and crap handling unless you lower it and fit bigger wheels...and it is "chavvy".

A Mini ?

Daihatsu Charade GTTI, 1.0l 3cyl turbo, 100BHP, Toyota Starlet GT Turbo/Glanza, 1.3l Turbo, 115BHP/133BHP depending on if you put it on low/high.

mazda 323 4wd turbo 1600cc 16v

Honda Civic, Mazda 323, Nissan 100NX, PUG 306, Toyota Corolla

Citroen Xantia Activa. 2.0 Turbo, very good at cornering and you can get a 99-2000 model with all the toys for that money. wont rust either.

I had a k reg sunny GTi, really nice car to drive 20L 16v, handling was great. and did go too

205 gti all the way or a 1.3 mini (but that wouldn't be under a grand!)

How about the Toyota Corolla Gti............nippy and handle really good

Also very easy to run and theyre not to bad on fuel either

What the hell are you talking about? Civic VTi pre 92 = 150BHP, after that it's 160BHP on all UK cars.

Astra GSis are still nice looking cars if you can find a standard non-rusty one. The C20XE is an excellent motorsport proved engine and is the best in its class.

It's also very easy to drop a C20LET and 6 speed box in it from a Calibra and you've then got a very very fast little car.
