Manual shift knob removal?

I apologize if this has already been discussed I tried to search for it but couldnt find it. I am wanting to change my manual shift knob on my 95, because its really worn. I found some I like at local stores. can I do this and if so how do I do it? I tried just to take it off like some other cars but it wouldnt budge. What do I do and will aftermarket shift knobs work? Thanks so much, Jordan

They just unscrew in the normal way, are usually loctite'd on though, so tend to be tighter than hell.

Do I stand the chance of breaking anthing else by screwing it off? or just grab ahold and unscrew, to the left correct??

Molegrips on the old gearknob are often required so it's likely to be damaged unless you can wrap cloth around it. There is a small risk of damaging the plastic bushes on the bottom of the lever, but never heard of anyone doing that.

Molegrips what is that? you mean like pliars wrapped around the shift knob to unscrew it? Should I just try that? Hopefully I wont damage anything else. Bought to go have a wing at it......

Alright I successfully got it off! My question now is: I didnt realize that the metal part when so far up into the actual knob. I was trying to loose a little bit of the length by replacing the knob. The knob I was going to buy was quite a bit shorter than that one, but know I am afraid that once i put the new one on it will show a lot of the metal part sticking up. Can that be shortened or would I have to purchase a shorter short shifter? Thanks, Jordan
